Yeah, the protection is worth it alone. Let me know how well it fits. Then I'll get one and do a temp comparison.

back when this was a hot topic, I built my own version of the oil filter cooler and put it on the bike. I pretty much forgot to post anything about until the other day with summer finally here in the mid west jogged my memory. Any how, it works pretty good, keeps me under 200F. It looks big and clunky but does not weigh much at all, lots of whittling! It has a o ring on the inside near the top of the filter and under where the hose clamp is. there is also a .100 dia wire that runs thru the lower part of the cooler and thru the 17 MM hex of the K&N filter.

Wow - awesome! How do you keep the O-rings in the right position? I suppose if you can engineer such a masterpiece you have somehow managed to turn a channel on the inside!

Cooling effect? not so sure but from a stand point of protecting the filter from puncture, looks great! Only drawback to it I see is it would stick down even farther than the filter making it more prone to impact. Certainly is a masterpiece of machining though!

From what I think of aluminum heat sink theory, it would only help, to what-ever degree, and protection would be better. It doses seem to be an extra 5/8" from the can filter bottom. But in the LOOK'S dept., it would be worth every bit of it.

this is what happens when you live in an area that has 9 months of winter!
there is an o-ring groove on the inside, the bore of the cooler fits very closely to the OD filter (closer contact better heat transfer), it also fits very close on the bottom of the filter as well, the extra material at the bottom of the cooler was left to provide a place to put the fins on the bottom. The actual side wall thickness of the cooler (not counting the fins) is only .100 inch. It still should be pretty rock resistant.
next oil change time there will be a little bit more machining done of the bottom fins.
