I came off my bike yesterday. As I came off, my face hit the ground. Fortunately, I had a full face helmet on, so there's not even a nick on my face. My jacket was at the cleaners, so I got road rash on my arms. I wore proper motorcycle gloves, so my hands are fine. Parts that were properly protected are good as new. Parts that made contact now hurt like a mofo. Fortunately, nothing was broken. Had I worn my jacket, I wouldn't have had a single scratch on me.
Wear your gear, folks.

Bummer! Same thing happened to me, many years ago. After religiously wearing my leather jacket every time I rode, hot or not, I left it at my good friends house cause I wanted to show off the new T shirt she bought me. Smacked a deer on the way home. Tore up the bike, broke a collar bone with some rash, AND destroyed the shirt. Pretty sure I would have come out unscathed if I'd had my jacket on!

Glad you're OK Alex (and greetings from "Krung Thep"). I'm a firm believer in wearing all my gear as well. Which is why I'd have a hard time wearing it in the Land of Smiles. Between the heat and humidity, I think I'd melt. So good on ya for wearing it. Hopefully the road rash is not too bad and you'll be on the mend quickly.

Well I am glad you are ok, Its double good you had your brain bucket on to protect your face. Hope the soreness goes soon. What happened if you don't mind?
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

As far as the bike is concerned, the bike fell on its side. The cable that connects the accelerator snapped, so the bike idles high all the time. The headlight rim got bent and the steering bars and the front fork are bent and out of alignment. Everything is fixable at a reasonable price. The bike is in the shop now and should be ready by Tuesday.
How it happened: I was driving from Sri Racha (a town about 30 miles away) at night on the main highway. The right lane (Thais drive on the left hand side) suddenly ended (there were no construction markers or anything) and I wound up on the gravel. I was looking to get back on the highway and watching for an opportunity. I realized that I was heading straight for a mile marker. I tried to avoid and had I been on the asphalt, I would have, but being on gravel, the bike got away from me and I went down.
As far as wearing gear, I picked up the Fieldsheer mesh jacket so I don't feel hot in it at all even in 40 degree heat. It's well vented and provides decent protection, so it can be worn here all the time.

Glad to hear you came out reasonably well.
Having a decent set of boots on saved me a lot of grief when I got hit by a car.
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

Add one more well wish here, Alex. Sorry to hear of this, though it does sound as if both you and your bike will be up and runnin' at 100% real soon again.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Its good that you are okay. It is important to wear the right gear to avoid worse injury. I too live in a warm climate but always wear my gear. Some people I know do not and I cringe at the thought of what will happen one day.

A buddy of mine is a very experienced rider. He told me to wear a full face helmet and a mesh jacket in a hot climate. He said that a mesh jacket won't be as cool as no jacket at all, but it's a good compromise between safety and comfort. The helmet stays on and I'm glad I had it. Otherwise, my nose would have been broken and I would be missing a few teeth.
Sometimes I see Thais looking at me with my gear on and laugh because they ride all the time and they wear nothing. However, I've seen more fatal accidents in two years that I've lived here than in all my time in the States. I figure: let them laugh. It's not fun coming off a bike. There's nothing between you and the pavement when you go down. There's no airbag, there's no seat belt, there are no crumple zones. It's just you and the pavement. The least one can do is have a jacket, a helmet, gloves and boots.

Hope you're feeling better soon and it's good to share your misfortune with caring friends , it helps lighten the load. You could have been injured far worse by the sounds of it so it was a good thing as well as a bad thing.

Glad your okay. I was riding home from work last Tuesday night, headed up highway 92 out of Fulton county, just before crossing over the hooch doing about 70 when a really large Doe came galloping across the hiway, I guess about 20 yards or so in front of me. Scared me more than anything, as a very minor "swerve" was all that was required. That was the first encounter with a deer I've had in nearly 50,000 miles, so I hope Im good for another 50,000!!!

Thanks for the well wishes, folks. The bandages on my right arm came off. I'm healing quite nicely. The doctor said the bandages will come off my left arm in a week.
