Always seems kinda strange to me to see "King Richard" there sportin' that blue oval logo on that belt buckle o' his, moe!
I still mainly think o' him racin' those Superbirds and other MOPAR products around those oval tracks back in the day.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

They're NASCAR legends and present day drivers, Shaun.
The premier race in this series, The Daytona 500, is bein' run this weekend at that Florida speedway.

When he died in 1992 at the not extremely ripe old age of 76, we put a Richard Petty toy car in his coffin. When I was a kid we got Petty's autograph and framed it. He was moved to tears. I wanted to put that in the coffin but my dad kept it.

Wow! He really WAS a big fan of his! Do you remember which model of Petty's car it was? Like I mentioned above, was it maybe one of his Superbirds?
(...that car was amazingly fast, ya know!)

No it was a later model car. It was whatever we could find at toys are us before the funeral. He didn't keep those kinds of things around even as big a fan as he was.

Yeah John! And besides, what WOULD you expect a guy who drove those SuperBIRDS to sport in his hatband anyway, HUH?!
(...I mean, "HORSE HAIR"???!!!...the guy isn't famous for drivin' Ford MUSTANGS around those oval tracks, ya know!!!)

Wow, I didn't know we had fashion police here at BA.com.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

+1
Now they are cardboard cutouts, replete with templates to ensure no deviation. Kinda blows that that little bit of soul is gone. The only thing stock about them is, well, nothing!
Back when the King was tearing up the track, the infield was a haven for lowbudget fans. When a wreck occurred on turn 3 you could run out the track and grab pieces. A friend of mine has one of Richard Petty's mangled fenders. You could burn tires on open fires, and just generally raise hell. I still have a jacket that shielded me from an exploding paint can. Yup, toss some aerosol cans in the fire and watch the fun. Young and dumb. And full of vinegar. Now? Jeez. Lake Lloyd RV spots go for five grand. And they wonder why the stands are not filled to capacity. The infield was filled with bonafide rebel flag wielding, Budweiser swilling, nascar fans. Now all one sees is rich folk in their motorhomes.
