I work with (not for) law enforcement and when talking to a State Trooper friend of mine who was in favor of regulations aimed at loud pipes, I asked... aren't you afraid that all the other troopers will call you gay if you right up some poor guy on a really cool bike? He was speachless... mission accomplished.

Well, sorry Paul, but after readin' what you asked the Officer there, I have to admit I'm kinda a little speechless myself here.

And maybe THAT'S 'cause I can't quite figure out what exactly your point was????

Were you tryin' to imply to the Officer that he would appear a bit "limp-wristed" or maybe like a "Drama Queen" if the Officer would have the "audacity" to enforce the local vehicle codes and pull over some guy ridin' some really tricked-out customized bike that ALSO might have the capability of nearly waking the dead when the guy starts it up or rides down the road on it???

So, was THAT your point? 'Cause if it WAS ol' buddy, then like I said above, I was pretty much "speechless" TOO after readin' what ya said there.

(...'cause Dude, it didn't make any sense!!!)

The article doesn't say what he beat the ticket with, but I applaud this man's efforts. Grab the ticket, head for a court of law and proceed to beat on it (possibly with a bat, or hammer). That'd be some of the best courtroom drama ever!!

Seriously though... I'd glad he beat it!

Yeah, maybe so Keith. BUT, that article(as is usually the case) fails to give us the reason or reasons WHY the Judge threw this citation out in this particular case, and just gave us a little something about how they are suppose to measure motorcycle exhaust noise levels in Edmonton. And, I sure wish they WOULD HAVE informed us about THAT...the reason, that is! I mean, HOW didn't "the police collect evidence [correctly]" and HOW "didn't [they] comply with standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers.", in THIS particular case...HUH?!

(...and so, I see your "crack" CBC up there is just about as "cracked" as any of OUR news outlets are down here, eh?!)

Yup, that was exactly my point, and I think most people who ride would agree. I'm not talking about the guy with open drag pipes rippin' it open just to impress every pre-pubesent kid who wants to be a biker. Remember 95% of our bikes wont pass the legislation they're trying to pass. Time for us to reach down, find a pair, and stand up for our rights. That's the American way.
Furthermore, most guys at the barracks would have used hurt words in line with my insinuation if they knew that he was enforcing such a "law". Most of them ride or wish they did. The only thing any cop has ever said to me is - "nice bike".

"William Andrew, the commissioner who heard the case, said he had difficulties with how police collected evidence because they didn't comply with standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers."

I want to see someone argue that the law unfairly targets motorcycles.

Well, I can see right here and now that this could easily get into yet another "discussion" around here about how much of a "Right" we "good ol' Americans" have to disrupt the RELATIVE peace and quiet of our fellow "good ol' Americans" with EXTREMELY LOUD FRIGGIN' EXHAUSTS on some of our motorsicles...BUT...I've already done THIS---> WAY too many times in the past around here by tryin' to reach some of my fellow "good ol' Americans" around here that a sense of moderation in this regard is NOT bein' "Un-American" in any sense of the word.

(...and soooooooo, I'll just let the rest of this fine membership around here have their say about this issue...'cause I don't feel like doin' this---> today!)

Actually most stock bikes of a cruiser variety are close to, if not exceeding the standards.

i have to agree with Dwight on the too loud pipe subject, as i did when we addressed this in the Arnold as motorcyclist of the year discussion. when the weather warms up the harleys come out in nor-cal and on the country road that i live on. nothing like the joy of open pipes at 2am (home after the bars close)

If it isn't broke, I haven't messed with it.

They're already violating 'disturbing the peace' regulations and should be fined accordingly. Arbitrary bans on pipes are ridiculous and it's more about generating revenue than making things quiet for sleeping children. I think I need to make a side trip to Alberta with my Specialty Spares.

Yeah, that's all I'm talking about, not completely abnoxious. Big brother has his sights set on us next with epa decals required on our pipes and all that crap. If we roll over and let the violation occur then we deserve what we get.

(...okay sorry, yeah I know what I said above about me bowin' out o' this thread here, but....)

Hey Paul, ever think that it MIGHT BE just a "few" of those "good ol' stouthearted American" fellow riders of ours out there runnin' those "completely obnoxious" exhausts on their pretty little motorcycles who MIGHT BE bringin' "some" of this unwanted attention our way....HUH???!!!

(...geeeee...I wonder...HUH???!!!)

Absolutely Dwight,I agree completely. The actions of a few can ruin it for everybody, but passing some draconian ordinance that no aftermarket performance pipe and many stock pipes could ever pass is painting All bikers with one large brush. I would never violate anybody's right to privacy and peace and quiet, babies need their sleep, etc.
As John pointed out there are already plenty of laws in place to prosecute the breakers of the peace. This law is just trying to pin us down with measurable evidence of said violation. I can only hope that the magistrates and judges will exercise some common sense in deciding whether alleged violators are being abnoxious or are law abiding riders who just happen to catch the admiring eye of some LEO'ssweetheart and inspire the vengefull barrage of tickets which can follow.
I don't own a gun and I never will, but I'll fight for my right to do so. Giving up our rights is getting to be a very common thing it seems to me.

Thank you, I was trying to post, hanging upside down during a web meeting while checking my voicemails. Guess I've identified my limitations.

Too easy. Debate settled. have a beer and relax.

I know that my pipes would not pass, I also know that my neighbors and family dont hear me pull in at 130AM.

It comes down to how you twist your wrist and if you want to be a JackHole or not. Personally I have never liked the sound of drag pipes. All sound no substance. But a good full throated rumble, good to go.

So I will now agree with Locopony. Lets just have a beer
(or two )
