Early in'42, there was a waiting line to sign up. Some folks (like my uncle who was a crane operator in a steel mill) were not allowed to sign up because they had a strategically critical job. Judging from their neatly combed hair, doesn't look like they were using any gas at all. No sign of exhaust smoke either. In '42, 200 - 250 miles per qt of oil was considered very good.
