the 89A route is much more scenic and there are plenty of fuel stops, as I mentioned. The road from Kanab to Page is booooring, (I almost ended up with heat stroke along that stretch one July) and then out from Page to Kaibeto is pretty desolate as well - and you are going way east of where you need to be.
Once you are back on 89 at Bitter Springs (nothing there but some houses) careful of the traffic. There will be a lot of folks headed for the lake for the weekend, and passing is a sport on that road. Luckily they have added passing lanes in the last few years.
