I want to remove the air box. But don't want to use Freak system. I got the uni. filter( in the days gone by we used form filter for wet location and paper filters{K&N type paper filters dry locations} and a filter for the primary case breather. Now what or people doing with the starter really and the thermo. swith for the carbi. heater? going to move the battery and how about the ing. switch? I'm tired of moveing the air box when I pull the carbirateor. And need a littel more H.P. for the sidecar.Rudy

Wouldn't changing your drive ratio via the sprockets give you more available power to the rear tire at a lot less cost and hassle, I guess you would have to balance that against your rpm at higher speeds, how fast do you cruise? From what I have gathered, carbs are but one facet of several things to do to achieve big H.P. gains.

I've got 16 tooth primary sprooket, and like that power and I can still go as fast as I want. Need a little low end power taking off. I did buy some of those cheap meg-a-phone(Dunstall) on E-bay. Getting ready for Rats in the Ozarks Ralley.Rudy

There are 43 and 44 tooth rear sprockets around as well. I know as well as anyone what a PITA our air boxes are. I pulled one yesterday on my '05 for a carb rejet and general clean up/detail access.

The filter box is history. I think I will leave the Battery where it is for now but I need about 8" more finder befor any rideing, wire feed weilder that should be any problem. But that will need to wait for two weeks, going to leave the country for a couple week. Not busness but fAMILY fun. wish I was home rideing my motorcycles temp. is going to reach 70 deg.. Rudy

well if you need a hand moving the battery let me know.
As far as the starter solenoid, I have that strapped to the top of my "relocated" battery. I'm not sure where you could stick it with the battery in the stock position. Possibly under the seat between the frame rails. You could make a metal pan and stash all the wiring up there.
I'm assuming youre ditching the left side cover? There was another member on here that got rid of the airbox but left the battery in the same spot. The name doesnt come to me at the moment. He was from the UK with a blacked out bike...if I think of it I'll PM you.

+1 on Tom's battery location. Don't spend the money on the freak. I did it and then next spring relocated the battery. Cleans it up nice. And it's lighter so you go faster

+2. I think the relocated battery box that Tom is supplying looks better than the freak. Here's a couple of pics of mine after I installed Tom's kit last winter. The only change I would consider at this point would be going to the flat filters that Erle is sporting on his bike.

I don't recall seeing the fuse block and ignition switch mounted that cleanly with Tom's setup. Did you do that or has he modified his bracket? Or am I smoking crack?

I wanted to keep the fuse box & ignition switch in the stock position. I pulled the whole battery tray assembly off, cut off the tray but left the rest of the mount that supports the fuse box and ignition switch enclosure intact and then remounted it all.

I like it I was just wondering what all was involved. Tom's bike doesn't look bad or anything but yours looks almost factory.

I had a couple 45 mains. And looking at the jet chart it said I need 45 if I had K&N. Three turns out on the pilot. starts easy and had a little popping on decel but runnes good. I think I will stay here till I read the plugs.Rudy

Too much popping on decel is lean pilot and if you are already 3 turns out then you should probably go up one size and re-adjust. That being said a certain amount of popping is to be expected with open pipes so don't try and eliminate it all together or you are then probably rich. Too much popping can also be caused by an exhaust leak.
EDIT: I supposed I should add that the K&N with open exhaust you should probably increase jet size. The K&N pod alone isn't that much with restrictive exhaust, you cab only take in as much a/f as you can let back out as exhaust.

Very nice! I love the clean look of that and love even more the idea of doing it myself.
Who is the "Tom" to which you are referring, and how do I go about getting one of his kits? (I'm still new to the forum and trying to associate everyone/everythng).
Any issues with the air filters shaking loose, or is there something other than the "hose clamp" keeping them on the carbs?
Thanks to everyone for all of the help so far, and a HUGE thanks for the patience! Great to have a place to find good info like this, and not being made to feel like an idiot is always a plus...

Some have had an issue with the pods staying on but in most cases it is from over tightening. I have never lost one off of either of our bikes.

I did, early on. Then I safety wired them. Then they almost never came off (I think just once after that).
I found the first one I lost on the highway. It was crushed bad. One I never found.

I want one of those custom brass battery covers with my bulldog on it so I'm going to have to do something like this to replace my battery box or just buckle down and buy a bracket from Tom. I totally dig Carl's solution for the fuse box and ignition, with the stock cover.

JUST CONFIRMED!
I talked to Carl (insane viking) and he confirmed that my design will accomodate this fuseblock/ignition setup.
So all those interested....YES you can have it like Carl!

I had a littel decel popping with 2.5 turns on pilot adj.. But it just didn't seem to come on. So I moved the CDI setting up to 7 from 6 (eight would not start with the adjustment I had) seem to run a lot better. But more decel poppeing. May need to adjust more but she sure runnes good 90 + MPH getting out of my confort zone with a sidecar. Rudy

Very nice finished product. I did the same only not as clean looking to mine as well. I also welded a length of angle iron to the mount and drilled some holes in it. Now it's a recessed spot for a few switches in an out of the way place.

+1 Excellent job on the battery relocation job. I was debating when I saw the other one that was posted on here but it seemed a little ruff. Yours has a nice clean look to it. I may have to revisit the idea. Nice Job!!

+1. I did that with my bracket from Tom too. It looks very professional and slick. Probably won't add an etched brass cover to the battery though. I don't think enough of it is visible under the seat.

I'm thinking of going the "no freak" route myself. I would want to go with Tom's set up if I decide to do it. What other parts would I need other than the pod filters, breather and a carb brace?

Some method for safety wiring the pods. I use actual safety wire.

It's funny how some have this issue and some don't, neither one of our bikes has ever lost a pod.

Nor had mine in over seven years, until my trip to the west coast. Both pods came off at different times. Probably a combination of the wear and tear over the years and the extreme heat of the desert regions. I've just replaced the original clamps with a thicker radiator type hose clamp. This seems to be a much better grip. Thanks to Englishyankee for the idea.
