A compromise between floorboards and the stock footpegs that I went with are Kuryakyn switchblades. Most of the time I don't use the collapsible heal rests, but when you're travelling on the straight open highway, those heal rests give some relief.
I got mine off of ebay for about $80, and the adapters were another $10 or so.
