The weather bobble heads are threatening 3" of snow down here tonight. In no way is this town prepared for any snow or ice. I can see the headlines now "Tragedy on Houston highways" because people are going to head out and drive directly into the deepest ditch they can find.

That happens here in Seattle every year....an inch or two of snow disables everything.
I usually stay home when that happens. Last thing I need is to be trapped in my car or have to abandon it, only to have it towed cause the city cant clear the roads or cause "citizens" cant drive in snow.

OK...Im good now...

Having grown up in New England, I'm pretty confident in my snow driving skills. However, what scares me are all the idiots in their big ol'4WD vehicles flying down the road at 60 mph, in a snow storm, thinking they rule the road.

I'm with Z, unless it's an emergency I'll stay home. Heck, I work there so no need to worry about going out.

Hopefully things will warm up quickly down in Texas. I think there's something going on down there this weekend? I know I'm making chili and getting a few beers ready for whatever it is.

I'll probably drag the chains out and go rescueing with the old F-250.
That is drive the roads and drag folks out o'the ditches. thats what I use to do when I lived up by Littlerock it snows once a year and its kinda fun to go round with a come-a-long and a chain to rescue the sheep.

Now they say 1-3" after 9:00 tonight, ending probably before daylight.

It will be cold enough to keep any of it from melting for a while.

I doubt that this would "shut down" many cities/communities that deal with this routinely, but you would be amazed at how many businesses will be closed here tomorrow, and those that aren't closed will have high absentee rates as employees call in.

My guess is that the snow & ice will be minimal, and the whole city will be taking a Holiday, regardless.

Sensationalism at it's best around here. I'll believe it when I see it.

Just another sign of getting older... Now, when it snows a lot, I just stay home. And I like it.

No snow, but a nice glaze over everything this morning. I'm sure the economy here suffered as nobody went to work. And that's probably a good thing looking at the destruction on the roadways.

Some poor chap wrecked his car on the Interstate, then, while sitting on the guardrail near his car, two trucks collide sending one of them into his car, pushing it into him. Pinned him to the guardrail and he died. When it's your time to go.....

Took me 3 1/2 hours to get to work this morning. 50 minutes to get home. And I seen some of the stoopidest shiite I've seen in a long time!

Last I heard - over 750 wrecks in houston, 4 fatalities.

I heard some dumb a$$# on the news this morning say he started to fishtail so he hit the brakes. I wanted to go take his drivers license away from him.
I stayed home didn't bother getting into the fray.

Smooth and steady on ice has always worked for me.

I saw people standing in the middle of the interstate looking at their cars stuck on ice patches. People backing up on ramps and inclines cause they couldn't make it up.... stoooopid.

Yeah, well, I'm still kinda wonderin' who the heck Will Houston is, and why Chad is so hopeful for his survival!!!

(...ya see, there's no question mark at the end of that thread heading, and so naturally I just assumed that this was a plea for the survival of one Will Houston...and once again, whoever the heck he is!!!!)

WAIT ONE MINUTE HERE, FOLK!!!

I think I've found out who Will Houston might be!

Uh huh, ya see I've found a whole list of 'em here....

http://www.zoominfo.com/people/Houston_Will_485197740.aspx

And from the looks of it, ALL these Will Houstons seem to be doin' pretty darn well!!!

(...though I admit I haven't as of yet had a chance to inspect all their books to see how well they're REALLY doin'!!!)

Well Ian, if Will is Whitney's father, then I'll bet after the way she's been actin' the last decade or so, Will's probably already succumbed to a heart attack somewhere along the line...and thus his "survival" would be a moot point by this time!!!!

Dwight, has it come down to bad puns now?
(just because a little omission of a question mark.)

OMISSION
1a : something neglected or left undone b : apathy toward or neglect of duty
2: the act of omitting : the state of being omitted

In '93 I was driving a Taxi Cab in Albquerque NM on the 7 PM x 7 AM shift. My cab was a slightly used Police Interceptor Ford Crown Vic and that thing was fast.

There was a big snowstorm predicted and at over 5,000 feet this city was gonna get hit and hard. Few people had snow tires and almost nobody knew how to drive in the snow.

Once I started out and the snow estimates started to exceed 10" of the white stuff I stopped into a Auto Supply Store and splurged for the best set of tire chains I could find.

They cost over $75 but I was to make a lot of money that night with those chains. By 9 PM that night we had over 6" on the ground and it was sticking and cars stopped moving.

My fellow cab drivers fell by the wayside one by one and they all pretty much quit by 10 PM.

Normally at the airport you could get a decent fare but you had to wait your turn in a holding area etc and it took a lot of time but could be worth it. That night I was the only cab running in town. Everybody loved me. When I got to the airport people were bidding up the fare to get a ride. I packed as many people into the cab as I could and I gave them all a break on the fare but they also paid individually for each trip so I was getting paid up to 10 x the normal fare.

The run out to Rio Rancho was a long but profitable one. Normally it ran about $25 and with a tip was a good run. Imagaine now instead of $25 per person you charged $40 for each fare and carried 5 fares instead of only one.

I cleaned up that night and I sold the tire chains the next time we had a storm to another cabbie after I quit the business.

That Crown Vic with a set of good chains hauled me around all night and the snow finally ended up at over 16" deep and I never got bogged down.

It was a wild night.
