I could have sworn there was something around here about this, a couple of months ago. It was some kind of film applied to the helmet that will help screen your eyes when riding in the direction of the sun. If I recall, it was sort of checkerboard in appearance. Was I imagining this or can someone point me in the direction of the link? Thanks in advance.

Not really a direct answer to your question, but I use a half-tint visor for this very purpose. It has a dark band at the top, and gradually fades out about half way down to clear. I know Shoei makes this. Not sure of other makes. I really like it. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/69/13014/ITEM/Shoei-CX-IV-Half-Tinted-Shield.aspxHarry.

Keith, Thanks but it's not fogging I'm worried about, but the glare of the late afternoon sun in my eyes when going home.

I used to have a sunblocker tinted strip on my first helmet. I think I got it from Aerostich or Cycle Gadgets (oh crap, it's shut down, dang it). It worked great. On my last helmet I ran a full tinted faceshield which sucked at night and I never kept a clear shield with me to swap out. On my current helmet that I purchased last Fall I couldn't find a sunblocker strip before I left for Washington, so I bought some auto tint from the Autozone and made my own. Lemme tell ya, it's hard to get the shape right. I ended up removing it after the first day. But if I decide to try it again I certainly have plenty of tint left.

I use the tinted strip mounted at the top of the face shield. Works a treat. The PinLock system, which I also use fall and spring has different tinted inserts that are perfect. If you don't need the anti-fog feature, well, it's still there-but the tints are are real nice.

Bummer. They had a nice place in Eureka Springs. Big fancy building and a guest puter they let customers use. Nice bunch of folks.
Here is a webbikeworld article on the home made tint.
I bought a sunblocker years ago. When I transferred it from my first gen hjc modular to my second generation HJC modular lid, The visor I removed it from was yellow! The strip was like new.
Great stuff.

Thanks very much moe, but a little late. I went and ordered the Teutonic Sunax device last week. it should be arriving soon. I'm looking forward to it because I get blinded everytime going home in the afternoon. It's even tougher this time of the year if I go out for a little ride in the afternoon.

No worries Steve. I recall a several years back at the 07 Nor'East rally standing in Ed's driveway as Pat was all tickled about his sunblocker! "Dude! You gotta check something out!"
How crest fallen the old lad was when I showed him my lid err helmet!

I bought window-tinting film in an auto-parts store and cut a strip to cover the very top part of my visor. This was 3-4 years ago and it's still great. Took me numerous tries to get the shape right but I got 8 ft for 4.99 or something and used a bit.

That is a major question I have about wearing a helmet. What should a guy look for if he rides in the day and at night? as far as a face screen goes.

I ran a tinted shield on my old helmet because I mostly rode in the daytime. But when I rode occasionally at night it was hell. In my opinion, a clear shield with a tinted strip along the top and a pair of sunglasses is the best set up. Your mileage may vary.
That said, for this year I have the pinlock anti-fog inserts so I'll probably buy a dark tinted pinlock shield to go inside my faceshield and forgo any other tinting schemes. Much easier to carry an insert than an extra tinted faceshield.

I wear a full-face helmet and had trouble trying to wear sunglasses in them. Either the glasses wouldn't fit or they'd fog up big time. I'm curious to see how this Sunax device works.

I have a tinted face shield. Used it until it pi$sed me off. Huh? Well you have to carry the clear one. That is if you want to see easily at night. Then you have to worry about scratching it up while in the saddle bag. Now a clear face shield is all I have. With the sunblocker strip at the inner/top of the shield. My HJC modular has a inner tinted face shield. Between the two of those riding West in the late afternoon is easy. What should someone look for if he rides in the day and at night? A clear face shield. With a strip of tint at the top. The thing is if you are out catching some wind, night vs day is irrelevant. Should a storm brew up the clear shield is needed even if it is the middle of the day. Hooligan face shield? A dark tinted one on a helmet with artsyfartsy graphics. To complete the look, be sure to wear baggy pants with your boxers showing. Have your shirt un-tucked under a ballistic jacket. Finally have squared off skins front and rear.

plus a face shield helps when you get behind some of these 4x4 trucks flinging dirtclods like missiles at ya.

Or bugs. After a day ride around Mt. Rainier, my face shield, jacket, Dart fly screen, mirrors, headlight, etc. are a kaleidoscope of colors, especially big green smears from different bugs.

I couldn't keep my face shield clean when riding along the East side of the Swanson Lake Reservoir one dark cold evening this past September. Ditto on North Dakota.

Just in case anyone is curious. The Sunax shield arrived today. Very nice looking product (das ist gut) and not too difficult fitting it into the helmet. I'm looking forward to trying it out as soon as I can . I don't think there will be any problems, other than "fine tuning" the position of the shield.

Their website explains it very well: Sunax English language website It just slides up between the inner and outer helmet shell. They suggest you use an old credit card first to ensure you have the room. It comes with a couple of attached friction pads that keep it from moving around. A review I read last week said he had trouble trying to get it in but I had no problem with it (a first for me!).

on one of my helmets a few years ago i just ran a piece of electrical tape accross the top, out of my line of vision. it was free and worked ok. now i have the symax2 with the flip down screen.
If it isn't broke, I haven't messed with it.

I've seen those helmets, but with my busted up left shoulder that is now weakened, I have limited range of movement of the left arm. I get nervous trying to do the old left hand 2-finger greeting to oncoming riders (in fact I rarely do it anymore, sorry). It would be even harder to get my left hand up to flip that down while riding.
This Sunax shield looks like it will fit the bill for my needs. Plus, when I change lids, I can take it out and fit it in the new one. I can't wait to get some good weather and try it out.
But thanks anyway. I'm sure others will find it useful.

I finally had a chance to try out the Sunax shield this past weekened and they get a big thumbs up. It definitely works as advertised. What's nice is that it is adjustable to fit your preferences. If you want it up a little higher, no problem. I'm happy with it so far. If you do order it from their website, be careful. You have to register on the site before you can order. Be sure to check the confirmation e-mail as they include a 3 euro discount on the order. Unfortunately, i found that out after I placed the order.

I'm from the cheapniss / ghetto shield skool - black electrical tape from the eyebrows up. Outside of a random strafing MiG, I usually don't look up that high anyway. Inside or outside - works just as good. A chunk of reflector tape works almost as good. If it's any consolation, I specify 3M Super 33+ tape. Accept no substitutes.

Black electrical tape is not see through. It does not obstruct your vision at all. It's like a giant sunglass lens. With your solution, sitting up front at a stop light, you'd have to tilt your head up even more. And the idea of some tape on my lid just doesn't look like it would look that good to others on the road. Different strokes for different folks. I'm just letting others know what I think of this product. I'd say I miss CT (having grown up there), but after the winter y'all had, no way!!

Here's a question for y'all. http://www.sunax.de/en/ contacted me about advertising on this site. This would probably be just a small ad square on the home page, nothing on the forum. I'm trying to figure out what to charge them. I can either hit them for a monthly fee and throw that in the operations fund, or I can try to negotiate a discount on their sunshields. What do you think? Would y'all buy some? I've never tried their product (but I might, regardless) and I'm not pimping them out, I'm just trying to gauge whether it would be worth it to get a 10% discount or something. If nobody uses the discount then I should just charge them money instead. Here's some objective info about it (I haven't gone back through this thread to see if anyone has mentioned them before) http://www.webbikeworld.com/r4/sunax-sunshield/
