You cannot physically disconnect the rev limiter. Not all is lost though. Ken's link provides a way to reprogram your CDI unit for a higher rev limit through Triumph Twiin Power (Pieman's services) (I had mine upped to 8500 rpms a couple of years ago with no problems). The other option is to purchase a Procom unit which is fully programmable yourself.

Hey lewie

Essex boy huh? Im in Basildon.. let me know if I can help you out.

Just done the Big Bore Kit job to a 904.. if your near you may hear me testing it LOL

I cure the rev limiter limit by geting a Procom unit, only raised it to 8500 but just stops me hitting it.

I have the Procom CDI. It has a variable rev limter. It's set at 9000rpm.
I have run it up to 8300. Mostly I shift between 5000-7500
depending on my mood.

The ignition system will run out of spark before the motor is unable handle the rpms... Bill Gately told me he runs these over 11k rpm, but he has dual ignitors to keep up. I'm sure 9000 is fine, ignition would probably drop off before it hit peak rpms anyway.

I doubt that Bill does that with stock rods & pistons.

I personally wouldn't run a stock piston/rod 865 over 8500. Stock cam 865/270, it's "game over" power-wise way before then anyhow.

It is known that some of the triples use the same rods as the twins and the triples run much higher revs. I've had my Bonnie up to 9,000rpm many times on the dyno while testing, with no problems so far. But as BO2S4 says, unless you've had extensive tuning work done, the power has gone before these high revs.

Bill and I also talk occasionally. I think he's using Wiesco pistons with Carillo rods. That's the same parts that I bought from him when I bought my BB kit.

What is the stock rev. limiter set at? I have only hit it a few times (2 or 3) Don't have a tach. to know.

790 = 7,400rpm, 865 = 8,000rpm.

On the 790 didn't the BA have a lower limit than the SM? I think I remember like a 500rpm difference.

My stock igniter 07 SM865/270 smacked the limiter at about 7600 indicated.

With the modded igniter it now does so at about 8250 indicated, which is what it is supposed to be set at.

Do these bikes make much power at higher revs. than that?
At what point does valve lash become a factor?
By the seat of my pants I would say that my peak power would be between 60 and 95 mph. in top gear. I don't know what that translates to in rpms.

my hp is still climbing when it hits the limiter at 8000 rpm. I don't know what the upper limit is. I suppose there is only one way to know for sure.

All 790's, 360° & 270° are set to 7,400rpm, having said that I have seen a couple of odd early America igniters set to 7,500rpm as standard.

Some of the early America igniters are the ones which cut out after touching the rev limiter and won't fire correctly again until the revs come down to around 5.5-6k, the cure to this is to raise the limit so you very rarely touch it.

Mike,

Mine would cut out just above 7000 rpms 03 America), not the 7400 stated. Since you raised it to 8500, I've never had the problem though.

Have you seen any other anomolies with the CDI programing on the 270 igniters with all the programing changes you have done?

Mine runs out of steam at the 8000 rpm mark which is probably a combination of restricted timing and breathing issues. I do have flow through TORS which are fairly loud and a stock airbox with all snorkels removed and the intake opened up. A freak would help the breathing part.

The 2001-2 790 igniters on both the 270° and 360° had a lump sticking out of the resin potting on the front, these tend to die more often, it may just be because they're older and they're the ones which cut out at high revs,

When you run out of steam at 8,000rpm it's as Triumph designed it to be. Mainly cams, but also restricted airflow through the carbs. I've been boring OEM carbs to 38mm and OEM throttle bodies to 39mm, even on a standard engine with airbox and free flowing pipes this streches out the usable revs to about 8,300-8,500rpm. With OEM carbs that last 1,000 revs from 7,000 to 8,000 always seems laboured, with larger carbs or TB's it takes that laboured feel away and your over 8,000rpm before you know it.

My 2005 Speedmaster has the rev limiter kick in at 7500rpm. It really kicks in,no warning, no mercy. Just like somebody hits the kill switch. To me it's dangerous especially if you are passing somebody and the limiter kicks in.

And this happened to me twice, when I spoke to Triumph they said " maybe you have bought the wrong bike, its a cruiser " LOL.

Big bore kit and procom igniter set to 8500 rpm and I never worry about it now.
