Thanks to Friar John for helping me get this posted. Again, I have sampled every oil change since the bike was new, and if I knew how to change the reports into a URL, I would have posted them all.... The only "negative" comments I have ever heard all pertain to silicon levels pointing to the air filtration. It varies from report to report, and has never been anything alarming. Usually if they comment about it, it has been a while since cleaning the UNI filter, so nothing surprising there. I do have some photos (if I knew how to post them)of a fairly polluted UNI filter, which I serviced at the same time I changed and sampled the oil, but it was at the 60K oil change, and the comments were not remarkable at that time. The report said everything was in good shape. It costs me $22.00 to have a sample analized, and they supply the free kits. I use only Shell Rotella-T Synthetic (now T6 Synthetic), and for the last 30K or more, exclusively the BOSCH 3300 oil filter. So, including the lab sample, about $45.00/service. And the satisfaction comes free!

On the first 4-5 reports, the Lead readings were a bit high, and the comments indicated it was a sign of bearings and such still "breaking in", and/or a "characteristic of this engine", because it remained consistently high, so it was not a concern. The reading at the first report was 45, and it fell slightly each time, not falling to 20 until the 28K sample. Since that time, Lead has remained below 20. I took that as telling me that the engine was still "breaking in" upwards of 20k miles....for what it's worth.

I too use nothing but Rotella and this makes me feel better.

Bearing surfaces for cranks and conrods are typically made of a combination of lead-copper, lead-tin or all three. Aluminum can also be used. This is coated over a thin steel shell insert which fits in the main bearing caps and conrods. Oil pressure is supposed to keep the bearing surfaces from contacting the crank but some scuffing usually takes place hence the lead, tin, copper deposits in the oil.
The cylinder walls are nickel plated aluminum. A lot of aluminum in the oil could indicate scuffed pistons.
Iron in the oil usually shows up when silica is present. Silica (sand) grinds away at all steel parts. Don't forget that the oil makes contact with a lot of steel parts in the transmission.

They put a lot of silicon in aluminum cylinders, makes them wear at least as well as traditional iron. So, your silicon levels could be from normal wear.
