I was worried about theft from my truck. I bought an alarm that did not make any noise. It would only beep me on my belt carried little receiver that the alarm had been tripped. It was installed onto my '83 Nissan King Cab and over the next four years I interrupted 3 separate attempts to break into my truck and caught the BG's in delecto.
It had a range of about 1/2 mile and that was enough. Any more range than that and I would die making the run to the truck. I once was at La Guardia airport in NYC to pick up a friend and the alarm went off. She was with me when I told her that I would be back ASAP but someone was messing with my truck. I ran into the parking garage and caught a 40 years old felon attempting to open my truck. I let him continue until he was inside....then I sneaked up on him and screwed a Smith and Wesson .38 into his right ear and applied the department issue wrist jewelery.
Turned out he was a wanted fugitive and he went back to the slammer. I spent another day and a half in court getting this mutt arraigned and such and I do not regret it.
There are alarms that will trigger a radio signal and you can have the fun of confronting your neighbors kids breaking into your garage etc. However the bad part starts when you have to shoot one of them and then have to defend your actions in a court of law where suddenly you are the defendant and they are the accuser.
Remember you are not entitled to use deadly force only to defend your property. You must have three things in place before your use of deadly force is legal:
1-the person must have placed you in fear of your life. If he had a knife and is 50 feet away from you and between your position and his is an impassable ditch then you cannot reasonably be in fear of your life. If however he is 30 feet away and armed with a knife and does not comply with your directions to drop it when told then fire away.
2-the person shot must have the ability to cause serious physical injury to you. If your target is an old man of 75 and weighs about 100 pounds and is only armed with hands and boots then your deadly physical force solution will not work for you. If however you are 68, overweight, in bad health and he is young and big then you might pull it off.
3-the person you shoot must have the ability to use this force against you. If you are 100 yds away you cannot shoot them unless they are firing at you with a firearm or a good archery set. If they are on the ground and you are on the roof then again they do not have the opportunity etc.
The right to carry and use a firearm against another person is fraught with liabilities. It should be your last resort.
They now make some dandy bean bags that you can fire in your trusty 12 gauge. Ditto on Tasers with ranges up to and longer than 20'. Tear gas slugs in the shotgun are really useful on your neighbors teen scum.
The best would seem to be a trained attack German Shepard that would be unleashed and allowed to feast on human flesh once the master is alerted to the threat to his prized possessions by a silent radio alarm.
Then armed with your trusty shotgun you can slowly amble along to the interior of your garage/shed/whatever and call off your dog and assess the situation. If warrented you may call 911 for an ambulance and the local fuzz. If only wounded then you might opt for just calling off the dog and letting the kid bleed for a while and let him go home with a lesson learned.
However keep in mind that some burglars come armed and they may opt to shoot your dog and you so be prepared to do battle to keep what is yours but only use that firearm if the above three conditions do exist and be prepared to surrender the firearm for a long period of time to the police for evidence etc and a long court battle.

Enjoyed your thought provoking disclosure, Dan. Coming from you with your background, it would be prudent to take it to heart.

Dan all of that is good except the dog bit, because the potential for mom or dad to sue you. saddly enough our courts are not a good place to end up. Even if you win your case you still end up out a lot of money. The wonderful thing about Texas is we have the "castle law" which allows you to protect your property with deadly force. Here you can even shoot some one for breaking into a niehbors house ( a case here Joe Horne in Pasadena Texas shot and killed two guys who were come out of his niehbors house with stuff they were trying to steal. Joe got no charges filled against him by the state prosecuter.) God Bless Texas!

I like the tear gas slugs where could one get such a thing if one were so inlined. You must have been a cop because you really know your stuff about personal protection. You should check out the Texas law I was telling about.

I've always been a fan of claymore mines. Gets a bit messy if the neighbors prize St. Bernhard accidentally wanders by, but....

I, for one, would NEVER, EVER, THINK about shooting an intruder with the .45ACP Hydrashok bullets I might have loaded in my Para-Ordinance P-12, and I would certainly not, under any circumstances, use the second clip loaded with said bullets. Never in a MILLION years, yer Honor. And I would NEVER keep it loaded and if I DID I would NEVER keep it, say, under a pillow, or stuck in between the mattress and box spring or in a holster strapped under my nightstand.
Nope. Not gonna happen.
