Its a little late for complaining about that song. They must be way behind the times. Is Dire Straits still a band anymore.

Ya, I hear you. It's getting ridiculous with all the censoring and careful not to say this or that. In music, it's a form of art and should not be hushed, banned, changed or anything. I swear it's just another way of living in fear and that's something I just don't get.

What do you expect from Canada? The pc capital of the world. My only complaint. That disease is spreading to America

I heard that news story teased on the radio but missed the story. I'm going to have to demote Canada one full notch on my esteem meter. I just don't love it as much as I did yesterday.

No not only in Canada (notice the capitalization of the title name of the country, thats due to the respect due the peoples there in). Political correctness is a speading cancer that appeared to be far worse in Canada. It is quite rampant here as well

And there is a movement starting (again) to edit MarK Twain's works that use the word "nigger".
As inappropriate as the word is in modern society, it was common usage at the time of the writing, as well as an integral part of Twain's scathing social commentary.
To take it out of Huck Finn would devalue the book.

The crazy part about the use of "Faggot" in the song is that the comment was made at Mark Knopfler by a removalist who was loading his furniture. Aparently the guy paid out on MK because of his ear ring and dress sense. Well who got the last laugh? MK - he got a song and his money and girls for nothing.

I heard this discussed on the radio yesterday. They remarked the word "colored" is also used in the song.
I guess Mark Knopfler isn't going to tour Canada, he surely plays that song in his solo shows? Now that I think about it, I'm a pretty big Knopfler fan, but can't recall him ever touring.

Tarkh barht, Tarkh bei!
That is the question..
I'm a canadian expat, and I don't quite like the fact that a song is banned for something like this... There are a lot of songs that get "edited" when played on the radio (for example, when you hear "mother______), they silence the "bad" word... So why in this case, they ban the whole song for just a word??? I don't get it.
I won't stop playing it here at my house, whenever the shuffle on my computer gets to that song... I'll just play it a bit louder!

Yep, I'd like to have a nickel for every time I've heard The Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner" being played on the radio like this:
"I don't want to get caught up in any of that funky [a missed beat] goin' down in the city"
(...yep, I'd probably be able to afford that beautiful new Norton...that is if they ever start delivery of 'em anyway)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

(not to sidetrack this thread but....)
Yeah newt, but that's what Matt Capri(the owner of South Bay Triumph in CA, and now the US distributor for the new Nortons) told me over a year ago. However, he told me THEN that they'd have 'em by May of 2010...a whole year earlier.
Btw, my buddy Phil, the doctor in SoCal with the collection of about 15 beautiful classic bikes, has just put down a deposit with Matt to get one of the first Norton Limited Editions.
I told him not to hold his breath until he gets his bike.
(...and now back to missing lyrics...)

(...and now that we're back on track here...) Ya know folks, after reading through this thread and particularly where some of my fellow Yanks seem to be badmouthing other countries about their "lack of freedom", I can't help but think of a little something Friar John posted in that "Current Events" thread today where he states: Quote:
I read a statistic, and again, this it to reinforce Steven's point, not to get political, that this is a violent country. Where there's a will there's a way. Not only do we outnumber all other civilized western countries in gun deaths per capita, we vastly outnumber other countries in knifing deaths (probably baseball bat and crowbar deaths as well). I'm waiting for the ban on cutlery to make it's way through congress.
And so, what I'm wondering here is IF with all this "freedom" with which we Americans supposedly pride ourselves...well, IF maybe with all this "freedom" IF we ALSO often lose sight of the idea of "personal restraint and responsibility" in our actions and/or words, as compared to other places in this world?
(...there's ya somethin' to contemplate, huh?!)

I sometimes think of the old example of NOT protected free speech, wherin a person is not allowed to yell fire in a movie theatre just for fun. Public discourse, and especially RADIO "personalities", are allowed to say nearly anything nowadays, whether true or not, as "entertainment. (And I'm specifically thinking of RL.) Yep, it's kind of a two-edged sword there, ain't it Rich?! (...notice if you will how this American here[me] introduced the idea of a weapon to use as his metaphor, folks ....HEY btw, come to THINK of it, isn't that "W" in the word "sword" SUPERFLUOUS TOO??????)

Public Service Announcement: BonnevilleAmerica.com does not discriminate against any person due to their gender, race, lifestyle, etc. If we have any gay members who are offended by the repetitive use of the word "faggot" in this thread I suppose I should add it to the censorship filter. ::sigh:: It's really not easy being me sometimes.

Well John, while I doubt anybody here is offended by THAT particular word, BUT seein' as how you seem to have control of that there word filter gizmo around here, MAYBE you can remove the word "D*m" as in the Hansen Dam British Ride in SoCal, like say whenever somebody wants to mention THAT!
(...I mean, come on...is anybody around here gonna be "offended" by the mention of a friggin' thing that holds back water, no matter how much that word sounds like a friggin' cuss word???!!!...now THAT'S ridiculous!!!)
****IMMEDIATE EDIT HERE*****
BY GOSH John, I guess you're way ahead of us here...DAM, I can actually spell "DAM" here!!!
Man...you're really loosin' up in your "old" age here, aren't cha John???!!!
(oh, btw folks, don't try to add an "n" at the end of that word dam, as it appears THAT is STILL "offensive" to our tender little sensibilities around here...ya see, watch: ******!!!)

And my $.02: I was watching George Carlin the other day. He goes on to mention that our "Bill of Rights" that were "endowed by the creator" is actually a man made set of rules that can be both given and taken away. Carlin says if they are "God given" then why do we have ten..... wait.... 17 now. Apparently God didn't get it right the first time. Also, Britain has, I think, 13, Sweden has a different number as well as Denmark, blah blah blah. So, unfortunately, our "freedom of speech" is more of a suggestion than a right given to us by powerful white men with strange white wigs. But until the day they decide to take it all away from us I suggest we continue to use whatever language you like with whatever words you choose. BTW, don't forget Charlie Daniels "devil went down to Georgia", most radio stations cut SOB out of the song. Steve Miller, Black Eyed Peas "Let's Get Retarded" changed to "Let's Get it Started". Nevermind even talking about book banning......

I realy love the way this gets laid at radios feet. Its forgoten that a certain T.V. personality had a snipers wanted sighn on the bottom of the screen while G.W. was giving a speech. John Carry said " I could go down to 1600 pennsulvania ave. and kill the real bird with one stone." on a T.V. personalities show one night. A certain President said he was carrying a gun to a knife fight. And many other such very same situations but it get spun to one side and layed on radio.
