You could say that vengeance is a form of mental illness, whether calculated and pre-mediated or the "temporary insanity" version in a moment of passion. And mercenaries or assassins have to have a certain moral flexibility that could be considered mental illness (sociopath or psychopath or whatever). Self-defense (or genuine defense of loved ones, country, etc.) is probably the only valid reason to take a life.
This was none of those things.

Well, other than your last sentence there, I have to say you might sound exactly like what that moron's lawyer might tell the jury when his case hits the court! (...but his last sentence will probably be: "This was ALL of those things") Ya see John, my point here, AND my long and drawn out point above there, was that just writing this all off as "just another nut job" actually gives credence to the argument that the guy "deserves" to just go to a mental hospital instead of where I think he ACTUALLY deserves to end up!

he does not deserve to go to a mental hospital. he should be in general population like Dahmer was. let him and mcveigh and kazinsky worry every day that they might get shancked and deprive the state the privilege of killing them. i don't think that is being to harsh but the ACLU would disagree.

Exactly my point again, Joe!
(...except, you might've forgotten that McVeigh was executed...and so THAT "deranged" moron doesn't have to worry about anything anymore)

June 11, 2001 was a beautiful day.
Having been to the National Memorial Museum in Oklahoma City, the only thing that blows is the photograph of McVeigh displayed prominently, just past the Origami cranes on the right. The memorial shop attendent says that he is a part of history, thus his photograph is displayed.
One can never fathom the intricacies of depraved minds. Yet immortality, albeit in infamy, is a recurrent theme. Let's hope that this Arizona terrorist's photo will not be shown nor displayed anywhere near the memorial that is sure to be erected.

There is no evidence that he degreed with her politically. He's a register independent and didn't bother to vote in the last election, doesn't sound like and activist to me. He hated her and thought she was stupid due to her response to his incoherent question posed to her at a rally in 2007. His question concerned the gov use of grammar for mind control.
Here's a guy with a long list of death threats. A guy that a college got a restraining order against even though he never made any threats on campus. He is a paranoid schizo.
When his rap sheet becomes public the authorities will have some explaining to do. He should have been institutionalized or at least medicated.

Good points there, Mac. Yes, it could've all just been "personal" to the guy, however, the question remains: Why did he primarily target a person in her profession, out of, I will guess, ALL of those with whom I'll bet he had a personal grudge against for any slights, real or imagined?
Once again, my point here is NOT to pin-point one particular side of any school of political thought and say something such as, "It's their fault". My point, and my concern is that as long as people hold to the idea that he was "just another nut job", that THIS could give credence to the argument that he "was crazy" and so that he shouldn't be held accountable for his actions as would anyone not deemed "crazy" should be.

I'm thankful Arizona has the death penalty. Maybe we'll get lucky and the piece of crap will get shanked before he makes trial and save the state of Arizona a few million dollars.

You can't take the discussion in this direction without it getting political. One particular faction likes to use gun and war metaphors in their rhetoric. That doesn't make them responsible for this dude. He is unbalanced. He is mentally deranged. He decided to act. He couldn't see through the rhetorical metaphor and decided to use it as a call to action.
We're not going through all that here because that makes us no better than the politicial pundits and talking heads ON BOTH SIDES who are trying to use this to their benefit. End of discussion.
Both sides have done this using gun metaphors though Obama said if they bring a knife we'll bring a gun to the fight. He also put cross hairs on maps and people along with the well known Palin episodes of the same rhetoric, and many other pundits and politicians on both sides. So you can't blame one side and not the other if thats the case. heated debate has always bee a part of American politics. I say this to say that both Dwight and John are correct. This guy was fixated on this woman politically and personally. I don't want him to get off on a crazy plea, but I am not willing to demonize our political system for it either. He took it upon hisself to shoot an elected official. I wish he was getting tried in Texas. He would get the express lane to the death chamber, where he belongs. John you are right we are better than the polical pundits. we can use our brains as individuals to remember the trueth of it all. We do not have to fall for the bull---- the media spews. They have all sided up and are trying to expliot this and its disgusting. We all know they are a vial bunch anyway.

Good points too there, Chad.
However, I think Mac brought up the best points made yet.
Yep, in my little "diatribe" this morning I probably overstated my case. What I probably should have said was that I think that positing the idea that "The guy is just another nut case" and then definitively stating that "his action were not politically motivated at all"(which I read a number of times in this thread), is as premature a statement at this time as all the positing by the media(as you make mention) that "our whole country's dialogue is as fault somehow".
(...because, in either case that guy's lawyer will have a ready "excuse" for his actions!)

John I think all is going civil here, and there is no need to lock the forum. I think we all agree that its not either sides fault because of rhetoric. We Americans love our heated debates. We also all want this jack a$$ to pay the price for his crime. Also I can say that this has been handles way better than the political discussions in other forums. Goes to show that we here are free thinkers and at least marginally intellegent group here. Yea Triumph rider if the rest of the world would just join us there could be well something anyway.

Well he did after all invoke both the "P" word and the "O" word. I had a bit of a kneejerk reaction with the padlock.

As you said this is not the place for a debate. Because John will lock the thread, and we will get grounded or something. I would be willing to debate it with you though if it can be kept civil. It would also have to be another place besides this forum The others will not like it here. Besides we may spark some to not be so civil as You and I can be.
