Hi I'm new to this forum. I picked up a (new to me) 2006 (790) America just before Christmas. It's in pretty good shape with only 6,000kms on the clock. One thing I can't seem to find on the bike is the tool kit most bikes come with. Do modern day Hinkley Triumphs come with breakdown tool kits and if so, where should I be looking on the bike to find it?
Thanks

Welcome John to the forums. As you've already gathered, they don't come with much. They really are dependable.

??

Nope, no tool kit. Tom (brokenfixed) came up with a couple of places to store tools once you get them. He has pics where you can see them in this thread.

Oh, and welcome to this site!

Keith, behind the plastic cover around the key switch is an allen wrench. Typically only on Speedmasters to remove the seat.

Thanks for the welcome guys.
I pulled off r/h side cover, ignition switch cover, fuse box cover - no tool kit but then again not much room in that area of a TBA for a tool roll anyway
mountainman's link has some great ideas for tool storage that I think I'll investigate though.
Cheers and hope you all had a great Christmas?

The tool kit under the cover is just an allen key clipped there.

The one piece tool kit only came w/the SMs, I think.
My '03 BA didn't come with one.

I have to go look to see if Wendy's 04 BA has one or not, I know my 04 SM does.

I suppose the responses so far might easily lead onto my next question then and that is; "In the time of owning your Speedmaster or America, what tools have you needed while out on the road?"
Thanks for all your help so far,

I pulled Wendy's caliper off but it turned out to be the tire was rubbing on the fender not the brakes.Never needed anything else yet. Chain breaker and master link is always good to carry. Unlike a belt a chain can be fixed along the road good as new so you can continue to ride.

Ummm, well the 'basics' really. Pliers, crescent wrench, a set of Allen keys, a multi-screwdriver. I like to carry a socket set with a 3/8th drive and 10 and 12 mm wrenches. If you were running tubeless tires I'd say carry a puncture repair kit and 12 volt pump but I believe your bike has laced wheels with tubes? Otherwise I like to carry a chunk of wire, some electrical tape, and spare fuses. I mean you will never carry enough for any and all scenarios... and no doubt many riders carry much, much more. As long as I can adjust my chain, tighten a loose nut or bolt and replace a fuse I feel more or less prepared.

Well that's true, Dave but it doesn't really constitute a 'toolkit.' And as suggested, I don't think the Americas had that.

Both of my 07 TBA's have had the allen wrench mounted in the cover by the keyswitch.

But I do carry some extra tools/fuses/oil filter (and duct tape)just in case. What exactly I carry is still evolving, based on the suggestions of other more experienced members here.

My '02 did not have it. Regardless, the stock bikes do not come with any tool other than the allen wrench, so tool rolls and kits are all personal preference. If you like to tinker with your bike, tools are good to have, but you don't really need many for roadside work. There have been many threads on what tools to carry.

The larger question is what tools would you use on the road? If you broke down would you call roadside assistance or break out the wrenches? That should inform your decision. I generally carry everything (except the jack) to do everything I've ever done to my bike (well, except maybe the specialty tool to do a valve adjustment). Beyond that I'm calling a tow truck (or a friend with a truck). The larger issue again is spare parts, not tires. I had my tool roll when my throttle cable broke, but no spare throttle cable. When my front tire went flat last year, I called the dealership in Missoula (where I happened to be when it went flat). When my drive belt broke in 2005 I was in Missoula again. I had all the tools I needed to replace it except a jack (which the dealer loaned me) and the spare belt (which I got from the Harley dealership). Now that I have a chain again, will I take my chain tool? Probably not.

Now that I have a SPOT GPS Messenger, I'll probably carry even less tools since I can call for help just about anywhere. Things rarely go wrong, but when they do, they're huge (the previously mentioned problems, and the ignitor problems I had this Summer). Every time I've broken down, a truck or trailer was involved, regardless of the tools I carry.

Next year my tool kit might look like this:

Allen wrenches (cuz they're useful for lots of small things)
Screwdriver with some bits
A wrench for the pillion seat bolt
A wrench for the driver seat bolt (these two seat bolts should be allen heads too--I could drop two tools)
A fuse assortment
Leatherman
Cell Phone
GEICO card
GPS beacon
Trailmix and a fizzy drink to tide me over while I wait for rescue

That's about it. I need to buy a slim set of motorcycle-style jumper cables.

I carry an adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, 1/4 drive socket set, allen/torx wrenchs, small needlenose etc in my saddlebags for long trips. Raingear too.

I also carry a tubeless patch repair kit complete with plugs and CO2 cartridges. For tubed tires....a cell phone and luck which I never had that's why I switched out my laced rims for mags.

Parts - fuses, clutch cable, extra headlight bulbs, CO2 cartridges, bungee cords, tie wrap fasteners, jumper wire.

Ha Friar!

Rule of thumb. Carry whatever tools you last used. When going cross country take the tools needed to get to the battery. And to get to the top tube. Lastly, tools to drop the float bowls and remove the jets. Beyond that, we'll have to look for Freedom's promised land and enjoy not the fizzy drinks, but the distilled variety! Oh yeah, given the Far North West, clothes to survive in sub zero temps!

I carry a clamp on cable barrel for broken cables but not sure how much good it would do for a broken throttle cable. Could swap the close cable for the open cable to get you home. I rode my bike home once holding the cable in my hand tied to an old bolt to make a T handle so I could pull on it to operate the throttle.

Nah, not scared off at all FriarJohn but there are some good ideas posted to help with my tools/spares set-up.
Thank you one & all for your useful suggestions. So much to learn when switching brands and styles of bike. My previous machine up to a week ago was a dual purpose Kawasaki KLE 500 but since getting
both knees replaced in September, the riding position of that bike was too cramped for my new knees hence the change of bike for a '06 model TBA.
Cheers

I carry a set of plugs too. I don't carry anything on my SM though since I have never had any problem with it at all.I have my cell to call a friend with a truck or tools if I ever need either. I do want to start taking my chain breaker though since any chain can fail.

Ya know Ian, you keep mentioning the chain breaker, however I don't recall anybody's chain failing 'em around here on their BA/SM. Seems to me these new stout O and X-ring babies are just that..."stout".

I mean, yeah, I suppose it's anyways a good idea to be prepared and all, especially if we're talkin' about an older bike like your Triumph Chopper(or say any older bike with a kickstarter and breaker-points ), but like I said, I haven't heard of anybody around here having their chain fail on these newer babies....a whole lot o' chain GUARDS maybe, but no chains.

(...though maybe you have, eh?!)

I have most of the above tools listed... I keep them in a leather tool roll under my headlight. Looks good and I carry extra plugs and the proper tools to change them (I) hope. (o; V.

Sounds like only the Speedmaster came out with them
But then the America is the most reliable and doesn't need tools

Your thinking is narrow on this one, surprised at that. If I have a chain breaker with me at all times then even if the guy with me loses a chain I have the tools to fix it instead of a ruined ride. My own chain did fail once but as you stated it was on my chopper. Having that breaker with me saved the day. It may not happen often but when it does happen that one time it is great to be prepared.

I suppose I should also say I don't mean to carry stuff for anyones bike that wouldn't also work on your own bike, but a chain breaker, small amount of duct tape wrapped around a pencil, some zip ties, small coil of electrical wire, some crimp connectors in a film vial,a clamp on cable barrel, set of plugs, and a master link or 2 are standards to me then a small assortment of tools. I carry water pump pliers, linemans pliers, small socket set (on a clip) a 3/8 ratchet that is the size of a 1/4 drive one with a flex handle, #2 and #3 phillips bits for the ratchet as well as a flat head, feeler gauges and gapping tool, wire cutters, small adjustable wrench. I would have to look but that is the bulk of my tool kit. On my chopper I carried timing tools and a spare breaker plate with points already on it.
