Last night I was out with the wife doing some Christmas shopping ( I hate shopping especially during the Holidays ), but we were having fun. We had dinner at the Texas road House and hit places other than the mall, Thats today, the mall . Anyway we stoped at specs and were looking for some livations because the chirinns are at mamaws . I got a bottle of Glen Morangie, Lasanta, wow that was some smooth, warm, full bodied stuff with absolutely the cleanest fininsh. It had a nice rich oaky tasted with sweet over tones from the sherry cask. I highly recomend it. It wasn't outrageously priced either about the same as Aberlour.

As a Scot, may I venture to suggest Isle of Jura (single malt, of course) Fine, smooth, peaty and a most pleasant way to wish the world goodbye

To be honest I'm a bit of a phillistine when it comes to scotch, bit like wine really.
To be honest I couldn't tell a single malt from tescos own brand.
However I can tell laphroaig from other scotch whiskey on account that just the smell of it makes me want to throw up.
Having said that I did quite like the Royal Lochnagar that I had at the concord rally a couple of years ago and a bottle of co -op cheapy stuff that tasted pretty good after a few newcastle brown's.
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

Hey, WATCH IT, Mike!!! One CAN enjoy their single malt scotch while listening to the sweet sounds of banjo music TOO, ya know!!!
IN FACT, I think I'll pop my new Steve Martin Bluegrass CD in the player right now as I enjoy a wee bit of MY favorite....

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

There are some very fine Scotch whiskies but I prefer an Irish whiskey. Always neat, but with a wee drop of water.

I second the Celt on Glenfiddich and am also partial to Dalwhinnie and Tobermory. All are smooth with just the right amount of peateyness. Probably a made up word but you know what I mean.

So, folks....whats the worst whiskey experience, then? My personal best(?worst) has to be a half bottle of Welsh whiskey(I know- it shouldnt be allowed)+ a bottle of Bulls Blood red wine( dont think they sell that particluar paint stripper anymore) at one of the Kent custom shows in the late 1980's....boy I was wrecked 2 days with that combination. But I was young then, the summers were longer, the sun shoen brighter etc...

In my cupboard at the moment are some Macallan and Glenmorangie.. love em both.
Laphroaig.. Ugh.. Drinking that is like licking out an ashtray, can't stand the stuff!
You know the unmistakable smell of an electrical fire when something burns out, the smell of blown resistors & capacitors that hits the back of your throat? Well wash all those components in some petrol (gasoline to you fellas) and bottle the result.. to me, thats what Laphroaig tastes like!
I do wonder if you have to be a smoker to appreciate it?

I believe that sort of talk is still a treasonable offence in some parts of the Highlands. Now, had you said that of certain brands of blended 'Wee Sleekit Courin Beastie Cream' then I'd understand. Al

Well Mike, in Ben's defense here, I have to say just on sheer principle alone I would never purchase "Laphroig"!
Ya see, the sound of its name always kind'a gave me the impression it might be a product of FRANCE than of Scotland!
(...well, close enough in sound, anyway!)

I love my scotch but am no snob, but am abit of a redneck. I can tell you read what I write on here. Just because I am southern as it comes don't mean I have no taste. I do ride a triumph you know. My swing hangs from an old oak tree any way. Nothing like a warm Texas winter night sitting on the ole swing with some Townes Vanzant on the radio, and a glass of good scotch on ice in hand. The worst whisky event I ever had was when I was 17. I skipped school and had a chick drive me out to my dads house. I got drunk as ---- on evan williams ( notice no caps in that title that stuff dont deserve it). Well when my Mom got home I slid under my car and started to do some work on the rear end. The heat, and the smell of rear end oil, along with the worst whiskey ever had me throwing up my gutts.

Some single malts are outstanding (Dwight's fav comes to mind), but there are also many outstanding blends too. Try some J.W. Blue Label Exquisite! My usual at the bar is Black Label neat, water back. At home I have The Balvenie when I feel like Scotch. Mostly I feel like this: Ice is for skating
