If the rubber diaphram on the carb is loose would that cause explosions/ backfiring from that side.
I just removed the top of the carb to see if I had put the needle in the correct order to find the rubber diaphram came out really easy, as though it was just sitting on top.
would this cause the problems descibed above?

It's supposed to just sit on the top. The cover that you removed is supposed to hold it down & keep everything sealed.

Under the diaphram, isn't that a dimple that should match up with a slot on top of the carb body? This is to ensure you have the slide/diaphram alligned correctly. Otherwise, yes, it would leak & do strange things.
