The attack on Pearl Harbor was not a namby pamby Ben Afflek movie. It was very real. Almost 2500 Americans lost their lives that day. They'll never be forgotten.

I'll be in Pearl Harbour later this month working. The visitors center and the Arizona Memorial are well worth the visit. The visitors center is interesting because a lot of the volunteers at the center were survivors of the attack. Unfortunately every year due to the age of the veterans there are less of them around. Picture of the USS Arizona Memorial visitor center. The bridge to the left goes to Ford Island which is were all the Destroyers were moored during the attach. Picture taken from the Bridge of the USNS WATERS. Picture of the USS Arizona Memorial. Ford Island behind and to the left of the Memorial. Picture again taken from the Bridge of the USNS WATERS. Tom

Capt. Obvious post, # 619: Not unlike the Twin Towers... More from the obvious files The movie Tora! Tora! Tora! was created to be an accurate presentation as told by both the US & Japan. Each side offered extensive creative input to get their points of view presented, which in war depiction movie making, is perhaps a very rare occurrence.

Yeah, I heard that's the approach Tarantino took on Inglourious Basterds, too.

Very true, Martin. However, don't forget that during involvement in any war, films are usually geared more to the "propaganda" side of film-making, and that it's usually years later and after a war where it's "acceptable" to be a little more "even-handled" and give some measure of insight into the thinking of former enemies. Clint Eastwood's recent films about the Iwo Jima landings being a case in point.

While stopped to fuel upon my way into the office today (in uniform as always) I was wished a rather chipper "Happy Pearl Harbor Day, Senior Chief!" ...it took every ounce of restraint I could muster not to start into "education mode" on this poor guy. Instead I opted for 10 moments of silence as I remembered those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that this idiot could bee-bop around without a clue in a free and democratic America. Take a moment to remember them, please. (and a small prayer that Jack-wagon gets hit by a bus wouldn't hurt either)

Had Pearl Harbour not occurred I wonder how WW2 would have played out and what standing the USA would have had in the post war world.
Would the USA have remained neutral? Definetly from a British perspective we would have struggled badly without the USA and so would the Soviet Union.
So without the Japanese attack and the subsequent German declaration of war on the USA, the world may be a different place and the USA may not have the international influence that it has now.
Anyhow it was still a nasty shock and as in all wars a tragic loss of life.
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

Well Graham, it sounds as if you might have heard that old story which says that after this tragic news broke and while all of America was shedding real tears, the ones being shed at 10 Downing Street were more of the crocodile variety. Though, considering by the time of the Pearl Harbor(<-no u ) attack, just about the only thing the man who resembled the English Bulldog could hang his hat on by that time was the sinking of the Bismarck by His Majesty's brave naval forces earlier in that year, I think we Yanks can cut ol' Winston a little slack for him possibly shedding those tears without total sincerity, eh?!

Ah so, Ian-san. Do you think Fuhrer-san would give most honorable(<-no u again) tours of Eagle's Nest to all people???
Naaah, Ian. I DISagree with your thesis here. WWII was waged between recognized countries with mostly clearly delineated "fronts", but TODAY we are mostly engaged in battle against "Guerrillas" using hit and run tactics. Clearly a whole different type of war, which demands whole different tactics.
(...and with THAT, I think we might be coming close to brushin' up against the A.U.P.s around here...and so, THIS is all I'm going to say in this thread...so long, folks!)

I think we are too concerned with trying to wage a clean war with no collateral damage today instead of leveling the place as in WW2.

I agree with ya Dog. It boggles my mind the way to handle things now days. But like Dwight said, its a different kind of war. Were not fighting a country but a group within the country. Makes it really hard to do that. If we just started leveling things(which I'd love) we'd kill a lot of "innocent" people. Its a tough one.
Personally I think we need to invent a bomb that levels stuff and paves at the same time.

Interesting Dwight, how you can clearly explain a point and those to whom it is being explained go on as if you said nothing. Yeah the hammer is being drawn as I type so that's all I'm saying too. Zach gets it though. Level and pave at the same time Nah, ends too many jobs

I was in Albany NY yesterday, working at one of the NY Thruway Travel plazas. Light snow and it was about 25 degrees. A guy rolled in wearing biker gear and on his leather jacket were "Leatherneck MC" three-piece colors. He stopped to tell the plaza manager the flag was all the way up, not at half-staff for Rememberance Day. I felt like an idiot for not spotting that myself. The manager fixed the flag while he was in the bathroom. I thanked him for alerting us and promised to check the rest of the plazas. I asked where he was heading and he was going to Paris Island, NC. That's about 20 hours on the road from that point in NY, wow, what a ride in good weather not to mention December! On the way home, the rest of the NY Thruway plazas had the flag correct (most also had POW/MIA flags under the US flag). But, on my way back to Maryland, less than half I spied from the interstate were half-staff. I fear we are forgetting these type of events.
