Very true, Martin. However, don't forget that during involvement in any war, films are usually geared more to the "propaganda" side of film-making, and that it's usually years later and after a war where it's "acceptable" to be a little more "even-handled" and give some measure of insight into the thinking of former enemies. Clint Eastwood's recent films about the Iwo Jima landings being a case in point.
