A friend came over the other night. Whilst having a couple of beers he let slip:

I'm going over to the woods tomorrow to meet up with a group of local bikers.

Now I get a little suspicious. He was a scooter boy in the 90's revival. You know the type, sharp suit, grubby parka etc. I didn't know he even still had a bike.

Oh yes, he says we meet up every Sunday and me and the other 'Bikers' go for a ride.

Now I'm getting excited....someone new to go for a ride out with.

Oh yeah, me and the other bikers love to ride through the woods in the morning

Then it struck me:

Clive they're not Bikers...They're cyclists!

Mountain bike riders have taken to calling themselves Bikers!!!!

He took real offence at being told he was a cyclist not a biker

It evokes a slightly different image and dress code. Should I trade the leathers for a pair of lycra cycling shorts. Will the wall of death be replaced by a velodrome?

I hadn't the heart to tell him that the woods he rides through are a well known local hangout for promiscuous men of a certain orientation. Wandering around in lycra is just putting temptation in their way.

My wife's wondering when these 'bikers' (CYCLISTS!) will start wearing leathers, although that'll probably just make them a more attractive target

Wow, I almost starting to think that was just a pacific northwest thing. I started hearing that around here a few years ago. The first time I heard it I just about died laughing. A guy that use to work in our office asked a delivery gal (who was wearing some bicycle brand shirt), "Are you a biker too?".

A bicyclist has bigger stones than most. Try a century sometime. Let gravity spill you down the BRP from Mount Mitchell to Asheville. Same handling as motorsickle and about the same speed too. Then after the road bores you, go to Tsali and ride the Left Loop. 12 miles of single and double track nirvana. Two wheels is 2 wheels. Funny clothing? Ha! How about chaps? Saddle butt beads. Vivacious inferences can be made of any sport. Each has their own 'better gear'.

Cyclist yes, Bikers no!

The defining demarcation being a throttle.

That actually sounds like it could be fun... key word being DOWN!
Once at the bottom though, i'd have to dump the bicycle for something motorized. Twenty years of chain smoking has made me kinda soft like that.

Well folks, according to.....

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/biker

...Tom is somewhat correct here.

However, I'M just thankful the Brits have never spelled it somethin' like: "bikeur"...with yet ANOTHER superfluous u in it!!!

Thank God for small favors(<--notice the "correct" lack of any needless "u" in this word)...EH?!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight, when I lived in Fresno, a lot of developments with the name _______ Point, put an 'e' at the end - "Pointe". Thought they could get 10% more for the fancy "e" upgrade

WHAT?! Are you KIDDING???!!!

NOT after I figured I could somehow insert my standard and ubiquitous "SUPERFLUOUS U joke" yet AGAIN in what is basically another etymological(that's the study of words and their origins, btw) thread around here!!!

(...didn't want to "disappoint" anyone here ya see, young Tom!!!)

Couldn't agree more with the road nazi comment!!! "SHARE THE ROAD" goes two ways. But they...'bicylists'...think sharing is meant only for cars. Um, sharing goes two ways, right? This is a BIG sore spot for me and I personally think bicylcles do not belong on a street.

Yeah Bob! That superfluous e there DOES kind'a sound like a bit like a stretch in order to make those places sound a little more "classy", doesn't it?!

But HEY, we're talkin' about FRESNO here, and so I suppose if I were in their shoes I'd probably resort to tryin' almost anything to class up the place TOO!!!

(...I mean, let's face it...it's NOT like it's beautiful downtown BAKERSFIELD there or anything, RIGHT???!!!)

I used to live in Asheville (8yrs) and that would be a great run,,,, but idd do it on the trump, in neutral, then have to put it in gear at the bottom..... long hike/pedal back to a civilized part of the area.

BTW Moving to Asheville / actually Fletcher and Arden is what made me hang up my 10 speeed. (yes pre mountain bike crapola).

The day we moved in, I Couldnt wait to get my 10 speed (bike)down and go check the surrounding areas out. After less than a mile on Hwy 25A 3 different pick ups tried to hit me. succeding in making me runn down the ditch. I got home and hung the thing up and didnt touch it again. Turned 16 a month later.

"No," he said... the man with the bicycle. "I'm not a biker. I was a cycler once. Since then I've been a recycler."

I don't even like it when the sport bike riders call themselves bikers. But then again, I don't even call myself a biker. To me it's a very narrow subset of cruiser rider.

Well John, might you feel a little better about it if you could start calling yourself a "Bikeur"???

(...ya know, maybe SOMETIMES a superfluous u COULD come in quite handy afterall, EH???!!!)

I reckon if you live, breathe and eat motorcycles ( thats not plastic ones ) than I would call you a "biker".
Our members here are all "bikers".
If you are in a club and terrorise others and distrubute drugs and murder and pillage, I would say you are a "bikie".
If you ride "plastic" bikes and ride to go really fast and do wheelstands at traffic lights, I would say you are a "bloody idiot".

Thats my opinion and I believe everyone is entitled to my opinion!
