I tried the streamer taped to the top of the shield idea.

I tried taping about 15 or 20 two-inch pieces of yarn along the top of my shield. (It looked dumb but this was a scientific experiment, eh?) Without lowers, the pieces of yarn vibrated wildly in a horizontal, if not downward, direction behind the top of the shield. With the lowers in place, the yarn blew upwards at almost the same angle as the shield.

I feel the lowers have to be set up to introduce air behind the shield to decrease the negative pressure behind the shield that tends to pull turbulent air down on your helmet.
