had a dog that would do that on my running route years ago, and once I did just what you prepared for - gave it a mighty kick in the ribs with my left foot, but I failed to think ahead about the inertia of a big dog and the forward momentum of a small runner at full stride and paid for it with road rash on both knees, elbows, and a shoulder as I rolled down the tarmac. Don't know what would happen on my bike, but I'd think twice about trying it again. The only good thing was that the dog never came at me again after that.
