After lunch today, 150 miles into a 250 mile ride, my riding buddy, Ron, informed me that since our last ride (about six weeks ago) he:

A. Finally retired, last Friday.
B. Divorced his wife of 40+ years
C. Is selling his house and moving to Brazil in a couple of weeks
D. His son is storing the bike for him and he will be back in March to see the doctor and wants to ride again then.

And that was that. I just said, "Ok, cool." and we went outside to talk to a guy about the custom paint on his Harley night-train.

Surreal, but I have then decided that rider friends are just lower maintenance than other friends and life is just the crap that happens between rides.

Thom I might be wrong, I sometimes am.

That's pretty much the long and short of it. It's nice to have friends like that.

Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Most of my rider (biker) friends are either in prison, dead, hiding or just moved away.

I think thats politics every where.

I don't know but I think any of your real friends are low maintenance. I know mine are, even if they are not riders. I do have to say I really dont have many real friends though. I think I have 2 or maybe 3.
I do have some riding buddies though 8 or 10.
I hate to hear you friend is moving away, that always sucks. My best friend only lives about 300 miles away but we talk at least monthly and all is cool. So I can only quote the person whow ever it is that said. "What a long strange trip it has been."

Most of my biker and aviations friends are best described as cats....they tend to do their own thing and yes, many fall into the above category... true, 2-3 good friends is a good number and in that 2-3 I count my wife as one of them...the other two are bikers and I've known them for years...but life is short , the ride is good and common interest with many is a great shared experience.... la vida loco ! but when the chips are down, it is good to know who you can count on !

Come on now, Tom. You've been around here long enough to have read of some of Ian's past exploits with which he's entertained us all over the years, haven't you???!!!

(...and so the question IS...Where have YOU been???)

You seem to have this um ... positive effect on your friends.

(Just kidding, Ian ... couldn't resist )

"If you have one true friend you have more than your share,” Thomas Fuller.

I am the opposite so to speak when it comes to friends. My wife has 2 real friends. Friend #2 has lost touch with her and friend #1. I on the other hand am accused of collecting friends.

I am not fazed by the fact that I probably take my friendships more seriously than some of my fair weather friends. So out of all the work buddies, friends of conveniences, and so on I like to think that I can count on my fingers of who I know will be there for me and my family if ever the poop hits the fan.

I can also say that out of 10 very close friends, there are five in particular that I would walk through fire for and I know the favor would be returned. Only one of those friends has a bike. He is 14,000 miles away and we have never gotten to ride together. I hope we get to soon.

I also had some great friends and riding buds who are still in WA state, Riding with them are some of the funist times I have had riding in a group. SO TO THE ROCKHOUNDS I SEND MY INVITATION TO TX!

I’m sorry to have been on a big soapbox. This is one of the topics I feel strongly about so I wanted to put my thoughts in.

“One who looks for a friend without faults will have none.”

Mal: "Y'all see the man hanging out of the spaceship with the really big gun?{ref, Jayne} Man's lookin' to kill some folk. So really, it's his will y'all should worry about thwarting."

Well that's alright Scott... I really appreciated what you had to say. Friends I often say, are the most rewarding of all relationships to be had. Let me add that a spouse or sibling (for example) can easily be up there too, if they also be your friend. Friends... if you can count on one hand the number of true friends you have, consider yourself fortunate. I have a buddy living here in the same town who I've known since 1968. Just the other day we spent an afternoon hanging out... shopping for winter tires, grabbing lunch and 4-wheeling down by the river while his truck got fitted with new skins. My other friends are tremendous people and I treasure their friendship too. But all in all... a friendship is the most awesome thing that can happen to a person.

So here's to friends new and lasting, young and old AND making friends here, which I have!!

Live to love, love to live.
