I finally replaced my Super Cheap $18 chain. I killed the last one in 5000 miles. I decided to splurge on this one, spent all of $49, shipping included. This one is an O-ring, gold-anodized. They also have red, blue, black. I've had it for about 2k miles so far. Had to adjust it twice in the first week, hasn't needed it since. The old one had to be tightened up about every other day, HA! Anyway, if you need a chain, check 'em out. D2Moto

I have just over 24,000 miles on my stock chain. I have adjusted it 3 times, but I still have lots of room for further adjustments. So unless something drastic changes I suspect I won't be changing the chain until after 30,000 miles.
So I think I'll stay with the OEM chain.

I'm right there with you. I've got over 28,500 on my stock chain and my sprockets still look good without any shark finning at all. I'll most likely replace it this spring with oem chain and sprockets.

Tom, on a spectrum basis you and Brian are each at the end of enthusiastic riding. Thus the difference in chain life.  The question is really how many miles did Brian get with the oem chain kit?

Alrighty then. We have a canary in the coal mine! Brian, Full kit replacement being the old 'egg vs chicken', how often do you change the rear sprocket? How about the front sprocket?

I got 16k miles out of the stock chain.
Replaced both sprockets at 29k.
I now have 36k on the odometer.

I got 23,000 out of the original chain and sprockets but could have gone farther and that was without lubing it. The front sprocket showed just the slightest of wear and the rear showed no visible wear. The chain wasn't too bad either, could have kept going but had to adjust twice on my trip to Fl so decided to change it out. went with the Triumph kit.

I would agree that I don't ride the America hard (well not all the time), but my Tiger has 18,000 miles on it, and I've only adjusted the chain on it three times. Due to the nature of the beast I do ride the Tiger much harder (it's actual very difficult not to ride it hard). The Tiger's chain life, based on its rate of wear, should last about 25,000 miles.

I guess I am toooo hard on my chains. I am lucky if I get 18,000 miles. I usually have to replace them at 16K or 17K. I clean and lube them,maybe it's this freakin desert heat and dust. I do not think I am too hard on it actually because I get good wear out of my Avon tires.

If you live in a sandy area the lube may actually be decreasing chain life by making sand stick to it and acting like sandpaper.

Dog you may have something there. A lot of the farmers in the area do NOT believe in lubing their chains on their equipment that run in the fields in the area. I just have always believed in lubing my chains. I think I am going to ignore this one more and see what happens.

You can take a couple more links out if you want to run the axle in the front third of the adjustment range.
