cigar lighter, loose change, 2 broken spark plugs, 3 -3/4 stainless steel nuts, monkey butt powder, A cell phone, and my state farm road insurance card.

8mm 10mm and 12mm gear wrenches, t25 torx bit and driver, assorted metric sockets and 1/4" drive ratchet, metric allen set, 6 way screwdriver, pliers, a couple spare fuses, small flashlight and squirrel condoms... I'm sure there are a couple other things too. All in my fork bag.

I carry a cruise M 1 econo kit and add to it to make it bike specific, the basic kit is 8,10,12,14 and 8 inch adj wrenches, 4,5,6 mm hex keys, 6 inch vise grips, tire gauge, led light, interchangeable bit screw driver, plug wrench ( threw the one that came with it in a drawer) and gapper, electrical tape and a few wire ties. I added for my BA, 3/8 rachet, 3 inch extension and 8,10,12,14,15 and a plug socket,.050 and 8 mm hex keys. Honda or maybe Yamaha factory tool kit axle wrench and a 17 mm bolt with a nut welded on for the front axle. And it all fits in the zipper case if carefully packed. I've used this kit and personalized it for 4 different bikes even bought a second one to set up for my 650l.

One thing I do carry is a pair of vise grips. I saw this some time ago, so in it went in my kit.

Heres a link to a tool kit thread . I have hard bags and dont mind dedicating the space to the kit especially on long rides to areas that Im not familiar with. Havent had to use it yet but I know I have it if I do. BTW...working on the bike for the last 3 years has given me a good idea of what to have on hand and this forum has given me the idea for that oil filter and headlight bulb (which only go if Im going overnight).

I remember reading a tool kit thread 6-7 years ago and being thoroughly impressed with what Phil (Bonnyusa) packed. My conclusion was "Invite Phil". jh

My approach is to carry whatever I need to tighten any fasteners that are likely to work loose. I settled on a small set of selected hex keys, a pair of tiny adjustable wrenches (useful for things like cable adjustment nuts), and a little baggie of sockets with a simple, L-shaped driver. This is a very small kit and requires little space.
A bit of wire and tape, some JB weld and a few cable ties will fasten everything else until I can limp home.
Don't forget fuses.
A leatherman tool or something similar is nice for general purpose stuff - I carry that on the bike, too, so I don't have anything hard fastened to my hip if I go down. A tire pressure gauge maybe, a spare set of keys hidden away in some clever spot, and enough folding money to get me out of trouble...

Thats funny I once had to use a small pair of vise grips like that when I broke the clutch lever on my 72 yamaha enduro.
For you guys with side mounted purses, a can wd-40 is nice when you get a sticky float/needle combo. I had to buy a can from wawa when that happened.

K.I.S.S.
Always carry that which you just used (at least for a tank full of fuel).
most roadside repairs require changing the spark plugs, dropping the carb bowls, dealing with the electrics, or adjusting the chain.
Carry a spare spark plug, coil if you have one, a sparky wire, and Duct tape. That's all ya need cept for a cell phone, your wallet and ID and the list you will compile per below...
Do a dry run of: removing the tank pulling a spark plug, dropping the bowls, adjusting the chain tightening the battery connections adjusting the shocks.
Then mark each with a piece of blue painter's tape.
Then when you want to ride simple gather up the marked tools, and ride!

Most places you ride, if you are alone, someone will be along shortly. If you ride with someone, between you, you can usually find the gear you need. Most of all, preride checks are going to save you teaching your bike a few choice words that would embarrass a trucker.

I keep seeing the vacume cap extras,,, just get a pc of vacume tube or small fuel line and run it between the two vacume ports. Small zip tie on each end. It ballances the vacume and I have never had a tube break off. (And hey! I got the idea from this here forum.) As for my list, I use a leather tool bag but carry it in my saddle bag.it includes, Air stick Slip Jaw pliers Regular and phillips screwdriver set of torx (lost the T25 of all sizes!) small fold up set of allens d tool stubby wratchet w/ 1/4 and 3/8 drives spark plug socket vacume tube for grabbing and starting spark plugs. self made 6ft mini jumper cable set of 6 metric open end wrenches some sockets electrical tape zip ties spare screws and 2 BIG cressents for rear axel nut/bolt. LED flash light in my tank bag. (2.50 right now at lowes with led key chain) thats all I can think of right now. Need to add fuses,,, thanks guys (I carry all the extra stuff for the Harley guys I ride with! )

The newer Harleys are a major PITA to work on anyway. I helped my buddy work on his Road Glide several years ago and I can't imagine fixing anything on that barge on the side of the road.

after reading this I updated my tool kit. I built a trailor and now carry my shop box with me.
