Have you considered the idea of turning the whole taillight assembly 180 degrees(i.e. "upside-down" in relation to the way you have it now), so that the billboard...err, I mean your license plate  sits below the line of the new fender cut and wouldn't be sitting up and thus drawing the eye to it as much?
