Have you ever tried S 100 polishing soap? It's basically laundry detergent and detailing clay. it works great on maintained wheels to keep the shine with out huge effort and wont stain whitewalls, it actually cleans them pretty well!!!!! For seriously grungy wheels it works but there are things that work better like Speedy's All Metal for example. Either of them work really well on chrome too. I also like S 100's bike wash better than anything else on the market, but their spray detailer is crap. Motorex Spray and Polish is the best detailer I've found, Their spray and shine is ok but can be streaky if not buffed enough, it works well as a winter storage coating and in salty environments though.
Sorry I'm told I'm a cleaning chemical fanatic, my old boss used to rag on me all the time for having the parts guys order so many different cleaners for shop use, I've tried most all of them on his dime. lol
