Greetings...I'm a new guy from Pompano Beach Florida.
Have an opportunity to purchase a 2006 Bonneville America for $4900.00 with only 2000 miles. I currently ride a 1997 H-D Sportster 1200C.
Any opinions if I would like the Bonneville? (vere road one).

There are some X Harley riders here that are members and with any luck they will chime in and tell you what they think comparatively. I only ever had 1 HD and that was a long time ago, been Triumph for many years now.Loved the old 650s and now love my SM.

Well Roy, to paraphrase the great Christopher Walken in a certain classic SNL skit...once you see 'The Light' you will realize that you indeed "have the fever, and the only cure is more cowbell...errr, I mean, gettin' yourself that Triumph you know you really want!!!
(they're GREAT bikes, dude...and you will NEVER regret purchasing one...PERIOD!!!!)

I've run a 1200 sporty-put about 25kmiles on it from new in 2004.
TBA performs better ,more reliably and handles way way better+ its a physically bigger bike-sold the sporty as I'm 6ft3ins and it was too small when loaded with beloved+luggage.Oh and I had to stop all the time for fuel on the sporty.
I'm not saying I'd never have a sporty again but if I had both bikes and had to throw one overboard,the HD would hit the water-no contest.
Buy a TBA and grin again

I agree with Dave. Check out bike trader and E-bay. I've seen brand new 09 America's for $5,900-6,300.

He didn't mention what it has for accessories. Those can be negotiable if he doesn't want some of the stuff. If there's nothing major on it, no saddlebags or windshield or aftermarket exhaust or no factory floorboards, for example, that price might be a touch high. Then again, the miles are very low. Poor thing isn't even broken in yet.

we are talking 22,000 miles vs. 2,000 miles though, I would pay a little more for the lower mileage even though the bike has tons of life left at 22,000.

It will run fine on regular. I usually get the mid-grade (plus) because we have 10% ethanol in our gas.

Thats what Triumph recommends, I use mid-grade. The '92 883 Sportster Deluxe that I bought new was sold after eight months of riding. The engine wasn't rubber mounted and vibrated like crazy at 70mph. You won't have that issue with an America. Currently have 47,000 miles on an '05. Very pleased with it. You won't regret getting it.
Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

I myself went from a 05 Sportster to a 06 America and it was the best thing I ever did, The sportster was a good fun ride but the America is in a different class.you wont regret it.

Let me clarify, the Sportster was a cute little bike. But that's all it was- a cute lil' bike sitting in the garage.

Hope that deal works out for you, you won't regret it. The only problem with these bikes is you will love it so much you won't wanna get off it, which inevitably leads to burning through tires, brakes pads,and oil changes, but hey that's a small price to pay for happiness!

I know, I just bought new tires and brake pads this week, changed the oil a month ago, the chain and sprockets got 27,500 miles on them, they're next but I was trying real hard not to think about them because I was hoping to put that off until spring!

turn the forks all the way to the left and the key should lock it. sorry if it sounds obvious.

That's what I thought. Must need a "special touch", because I can't do it?
In any event, the TBA seems to be a refined machine compared to my Sportster.
Suspension is really comfortable and handling is great. Engine noise is way different than the HD and I'll have to get used to that.
The forward controls would be a problem if I was 1" shorter (I'm 5'7"), but I just reach!

While at full left-stop, some bikes need to have you gently 'rock' the bar off the left-stop a wee bit as you turn the key to lock the steering column. Think of 'rock' as slightly wiggling the steering (using the right grip) while the bike is on its side stand at full left.
Succinctly: Wiggle the bar while turning the key...

It is possible to move the controls back a little. I solved the reach problem on Wendy's bike with the floor boards. I installed the boards allowing her to move her feet around where ever comfortable while riding. I then took the arm off the splined shaft where it comes out of the transmission and moved it to a position bringing the shift pedal back so she didn't have to reach for it leaving adjustment on the rod. I also adjusted the brake pedal back using the adjustment rod. She is 5'2.I lowered the bike 2" and brought the bars back for her too.

I know this should be simple and it's my 5th bike, so I just feel kinda dumb...

Just wondering if you're using the right key?
The ignition key doesn't work the lock, so maybe the guy you got it off has lost the lock key?

No, not that. I got 2 ignition keys, 2 fork keys and the key ID tag with the sale.
Guess I'll just keep playing with it or add a different type lock.
I don't like to use disc locks tho; too easy to forget they're on.

Invest in a caliper lock its better I cant even find the key to the fork lock any more. cant find my spare key either, thats a bit disconcerting. I beat a 1200 sportster off the line with mine a few weeks ago, and maintained about 1/2 a bike length through all 5 gears. With my 06 america I love it, and thought about trading it for the new thunderbird but couldn't part with it. I named her Matilda. the first brand new bike I ever bought. Paid cash straight up.

Good deal & welcome. I think the fork lock, when not used regularly can be a bit stiff. I'd put a shot of some type of lubricant in the mechanism if you need to use it. I remember the first time I locked my bike, it took quite a bit of wiggling to get it work, than smoothly on subsequent tries.
