Thanks Brent. I know that most people on this forum know where I am coming from.

I don't remember mentioning an elusive secret but I do remember saying that if I need to explain it that you would'nt understand and I guess I was right about that.

Now John why do you say I need to lighten up? I am not upset at anyone here nor do I want an argument but am merely trying to explain what was asked of me. Besides I just got back from a nice little ride on my kawasaki in the lovely sunshine so alls good over here.

Wrong.
Ian said that ... not you. Get your facts right.

I was talking cruisers ... you were talking retros (to include Thruxton's and T100's). Get your facts right.

An implied or direct insult directed at me doesn't help your argument.
Get your facts right.

I think maybe you should check your facts as I said that before Ian did. Get your facts Right!

I was talking about upgrades not cruisers and retros.

I did not insult anyone. Get your facts right!

If you are upset about this that is your problem and I don't really care for arguing like this.

Kawasaki? Is that an upgrade, downgrade or sidegrade? I'm starting to get confused.

Ah geez Ian.

Spitting out tired old Harley pseudo-aphorisms to justify your inability to articulate your point

If one considers it an upgrade, then it's an upgrade. The opinion of anyone other than the one making the decision is completely irrelevant.

If you don't consider it as such good for you, but it is just your opinion.

Bill, you are well aware I perfectly able to articulate my position on just about any point but that left me such a perfect opening for that tired old line. It made me chuckle so I posted it.
I was just having a little fun, I stated my point and position the first time this thread came around.

Bedouin, I wasn't trying to insult you with my quip, I was just having some fun. I would love to have an R3T but upgrade? no, just another bike to add to my collection and have fun with. Just like all my other Triumphs my SM is mine until I die.

We were instructed to be on our best behaviour as a Ranger visitiing from Australia was going to join us. About 8 pm there was a knock at the trailer door and some Gonzo guy wearing a t-shirt, shorts and ratty tennis shoes enters. Wasn't insulted Ian, no problem. My reply (see below) to you didn't reflect that.

""I have taken my Speedy to 25 or so countries and love it to death.
Excluding my own thoughts on the matter and our obvious love for our Speedies and America's, Triumph is calling the Bird an upgrade.
So, what pray, do you possibly think you could explain to me?""

It is an upgrade if you keep the word in perspective.

A person with a 750 GSXR certainly would not think the Speedmaster is an upgrade. They like quick and agile. We brag about our bikes but we brag about their lean clearance. The 750 GSXR same grade of rider will eat a Speedmaster alive on twisties and straight line. A person with a Goldwing would think the same. They would not drive a Speedmaster on a 1000 mile ride. Its not heavy enough for them and does not have the HP they want for highway hauling, passing, and cruising.

The Thunderbird is a cruiser. The America and Speedmaster are in the cruiser class. They surely are not high performance cruisers. They are very good functional motorcycles. You can drive them across country. You cannot use them in the MotoGP. lol. They are not tourers but you can tour with them. So, if we agree they are a cruiser.

The Thunderbird maintains a constant temperature with liquid cooling and has a very quiet belt drive eliminating lash and chain wash noises. It is a heavy well planted bike that takes road blemishes (bumps) very well. It has nearly twice the horsepower and more than twice the torque of a Speedmaster or America.

A Chevy Aveo owner can park that sucker anywhere! So I guess they would be upset if somebody was upgrading them to the Impala.

I have noticed that the bikes the board seems to drool over are the Ducati type bikes, Nortons, racing bars, rear set controls etc. In the same thought we seem to not like chopper types very much. Cafe racers and bobbers are about as cool as it gets. Just teasing a little there are exceptions.

I like long, low, forward controls, laid back riding. I really like my America. The Thunderbird to me, is my America with a crap load of torque and smoothness. I say its an upgrade in the cruiser class. It is not a cafe racer. Neither is a Speedmaster.

The idea that a Speedmaster will eat the Thunderbird up in the mountain turns has absolutely no bearing on the quality of the bike. Its a cruiser! In its class its better.

Disclaimer: I have not bought one and don't plan on it. There are much better cruisers out there than the Thunderbird IMHO>

When I upgraded my VW Golf to a 300M last December it was definitely an upgrade. No marketing about it. Do I dislike my Golf? No. Great little car, and it has more than a little bit of nostalgia for me since I've had air and water-cooled VWs for over nearly 30 years. Fahrvergnügen, baby. I could get in it today and drive it across the country if I had to. Ultimately I just wanted something bigger, faster and more comfortable. About all I gave up was some fuel economy. Am I a Chrysler guy? No, despite the fact I have two of them now. The 300M is an appliance to me, nothing special. If I wrecked it or it got stolen I'd be pissed but it wouldn't break my heart.

Unlike my America (I think you can see the parallels here) I will get rid of the Golf soon. But the Golf isn't my first car, but it is my first car brand.

I'm not so myopic to think that there is only one bike worth having. My god, from the discussion you'd think we were talking about "upgrading" to a Harley here. It's still Triumph. It's still in the family. I wonder if people would be so up in arms if we were talking about "upgrading" to a Speed Triple.

Many are dissatisfied with the product as soon as they get it. Upgrade sells stuff to people who wanted it. Triumph and the rest of them look at the consumers and what they are doing.

I wonder how many results we would get over the last few years on "belt drive", "shocks" or "Big Bore", "Brakes", or "1600", "two-up power", "Something between the Rocket and the America".

We asked for the Thunderbird in a very big way. We got the little bikes upgraded the way we were upgrading them anyhow. Triumph listened and provided!

I say "Way to go Triumph!" We went our own way and they watched then went with us. Now that is a great company.

Hahahaha... good point. Just look at how many of the Thunderbird's features show up in the "wishlist" thread for the America/Speedmaster. As you said, more power, belt drive, 6speed, etc. I suppose people would be ecstatic if they made the Thunderbird aircooled, carburetted and kickstart.

Oh REALLY, Ron?! Then where in Triumph's lineup is that 1000cc air-cooled Triumph Twin puttin' out about 70 to 80HP and with good suspension units bolted onto it? You know, like the one I've been hollerin' that Triumph should've been makin' AT THE FACTORY these last 7 to 8 years now!

Evidently them fellas over there on that li'l island ain't listenin' to ME, or for THAT matter, ALL the folks out there who have been puttin' big bores and/or generally "upgrading" the performance of their Bonnevilles(both standard and cruisers) lo these many years by means of the Aftermarket.

(...yep, I still say that Bloor's Boyz have overlooked a sizable segment of the M/C purchasing public who MIGHT have considered buying a Bonneville IF it wasn't primarily "built to a cost", and lived up just a little more to its performance oriented namesake of yore...which, btw, seems to be a reoccurring thought mentioned within almost all reviews I've ever read of these bikes in motorcycle enthusiast magazines)

I never wanted a 1000cc P-twin. Never wanted a Bonneville again ever.

The big bores went as far as big could go on that platform. I don't remember folks saying if its more than 1000cc they don't want it.

They gave you a bigger P-twin with a ton of thump. You got some of what you wanted. You are just pissed about the fins.

What do you have against triples? They make the performance you need at the right size. Its called a Sprint.

I'd love a 1000cc Bonneville. That's what's so cool about the Ducati GT1000 (too much space between the rear tire and the fender make it look a little weird though).

Been riding 37 years. Been riding big V-twins for close to 20 of them. I was riding a Kaw Vulcan 1500 (great bike) when I walked into the Triumph shop with absolutely no plan of changing bikes. Fell in love with my America as soon as I laid eyes on it. My incredible wife said, "Buy it. You deserve it." (God, I love her.)
I took it for a ride and I've never looked back. Bigger is not always better.

Why's that?!

Quote:

On the contrary, Ron! Quite a sizable percentage of Matt Capri's (South Bay Triumph) business is installing big bore kits at his dealership...some as large as 1148cc(both bored and stroked, of course). Word is, reliability isn't compromised much at all.

And, whenever I'd bring up to Matt that I sure wish Bloor's Boyz would start makin' a larger displacement Bonnie at the factory, he'd jokingly tell me to please keep that to myself, as that would really cut into his business!

Quote:

I don't remember folks saying if its more than 1000cc they don't want it.

Actually, I hear it all the time, Ron. And, the folks who usually say it, say something like, "So, that's only an 800, huh?! Well, I'm lookin' for somethin' a little bigger than that, myself! But, you sure have a nice lookin' bike there."

Quote:

They gave you a bigger P-twin with a ton of thump. You got some of what you wanted. You are just pissed about the fins.

Actually Ron, they could've added more o' those fins on the T-Bird's motor, but ya know what...and I think you do...it STILL wouldn't look as "rightfully retro"(read: classically styled) as the motors in every AIR-cooled Bonneville ever made!(that would, of course, include all those made in Meriden AND Hinckley, btw)

Quote:

What do you have against triples? They make the performance you need at the right size. Its called a Sprint.

Well, I have nothin' against triples, EXCEPT a few things, and those are:

(a) Even the old air-cooled Triumph triple engines of the late 60s and early 70s didn't "look" quite as "good"(once again, in that "classic way", as did the Twins.

(b) While I like the sound of that "howl" most triples make when ya get 'em a handful of throttle, they still don't have that cadence or make that sound that a Twin makes.

(c) The Sprint, which has a great all-round motor, is still water-cooled...and I have YET to ever see a water-cooled motorcycle engine which "looks" as good or as "right" as an air-cooled one...in that "classic" sort o' way, once again. And, maybe the reason MOST water-cooled motorcycles hide their engines behind some kind o' bodywork.

Hahahaha... good point. Just look at how many of the Thunderbird's features show up in the "wishlist" thread for the America/Speedmaster. As you said, more power, belt drive, 6speed, etc. I suppose people would be ecstatic if they made the Thunderbird aircooled, carburetted and kickstart.

And an indented fuel tank...

I never wanted a 1000cc P-twin. Never wanted a Bonneville again ever.

Why's that?!

The big bores went as far as big could go on that platform.

The 360s vibrate like hell and sit you straight up. Don't want one. If I did, I would have bought one and not the America. Totally different bikes. I have 0 use for cafe racers. If I wanted that position I would buy a Honda 919 used for a few thousand and go like hell.

If I had a choice between bored, stroked, and cams by a third party I would take the Thunderbird. 90HP out of the box is a good deal. I think the T-bird still wins the drag race stock after somebody spends several grand with him to make the 865 kinda fast. If I had a choice of liquid over air, I would take the air. But you don't always get what you want.

You already know you don't get it all in one bike. There is only one thing about the old technology. It is old. I don't want points, condensers, or Mr. Lucas either. That is the first thing they change on restorations just after gaskets that actually work.

In any event, I think the Thunderbird is selling to some folks who obviously like them.

The liquid makes it like the Rocket. The new 21st Century Triumph. Triumph can't continue in the retro business and grow. I know it hurts your feelings. I like air cooled too. It is going away slowly but very surely. With liquid you can build to tighter tolerances. Its just science.

The popularity of our bikes for gawking at them is really big. Look at the little bits of money they bring on the used market though. Folks like to look at them but they sure are not willing to pay a lot for them.

I think Triumph is doing a great job. They listened to part of what you want. As you will never buy a new Triumph, obviously they can't please everybody. I think they are trying.

I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Bedouin, I wasn't trying to insult you with my quip, I was just having some fun.

Nothing at all, that's my whole point. I just posted it because it fit and I thought it funny. As for not understanding it is the way I feel about my bike, nothing you can explain. Unless you feel the same way you wouldn't understand so it can't be explained but again ,not why I posted that.I don't feel there is an upgrade from my bike and I'm sure others feel the same.My bike has done everything I have asked of it including long trips loaded down with gear.

Like I said Ian, no prob.

I've always had 3,4 or even 5 bikes in my stable at one time and have had a different love affair with each. Not particularly religious about any specific one.
I currently have 4 wives (sold the Aprilia Mille recently) and they just serve my purposes in each case (hmm ... that did sound like a specific religion).

Bedouin. Blessed are those eyes that have seen more roads than any man! (Homer).

Bill, you are well aware I perfectly able to articulate my position on just about any point but that left me such a perfect opening for that tired old line. It made me chuckle so I posted it.
I was just having a little fun, I stated my point and position the first time this thread came around.

Of course I'm aware of that
I guess I was just disappointed to see that tired phrase when i know you usually do so much better.

But since it was all in fun
I'll take it as that

In my mind the T-bird is a long-distance freeway cruiser - to heavy for the twisties and urban riding.
