Dear Sirs
Please can you send me my free parrot.....oh and the eyepatch wont be necessary- having ridden Harleys for many a year before my conversion, I clearly no longer need a patch for the temporary blind spot this entailed

Al

Dear Mr. Al Griffin,

Please be advised that the free offer of a parrot AND an eyepatch can not be a separate transaction and must be given and received in tandem, as the eye-patch was in fact designed for the parrot to wear, and not for the owner of their newly purchased Triumph Thunderbird.

Dear Mr Bloor
of course, how silly of me.
Please send the parrot complete with a spare patch if possible- in case it should lose sight in it's other eye...you see I'm a bit clumsy with the hook.

My original intent for this thread was not to bash the T-Bird. I wanted to simply say that I am tired of people saying that they are trading-up to, graduating to or upgrading to the T-Bird, like our bikes are some little training bike. No, I dont care for the new T-Bird, but a lot of people do, that is good for Triumph, but not for me. If someone does go from a Speedy or America to a Thundrbird, it a step side-ways (with a bigger motor) not up. It is something completely different.

My intent wasn't to bash it either just my impression of it, some of the things I don't like about it are the same things I don't like about the new SM. If people like the Tbird then fine but I don't feel it is a step up as in saying my bike is inferior. I don't think that is the case, my bike has done anything I have asked it to and never let me down. I feel no need for larger displacement and like the styling of my bike far more than any other. My bike is right for me, if it isn't right for the next person that doesn't make the bike they choose a step up any more than mine is a step up from what they like.

Dear Mr. Al Griffin or Capt. Long John Silver (..or whoever the h*ll you really are),

We at Triumph Motorcycle LTD are sorry to also report to you that our inventory of eyepatches is extremely limited at this time, and thus your request for an additional eyepatch for your parrot can not be granted at this time.

However, may we suggest that if in the future your parrot does unfortunately happen to misplace his eyepatch, it is quite possible that your nearest Harley-Davidson dealership in Kent could have a replacement eyepatch available for a nominal fee, though please also be advised Triumph Motorcycle LTD can not guarantee the quality of any Harley-Davidson related products.

Yours Truly(again),

If I graduate to a T-Bird , it will be to upgrade my distance and perhaps two up touring ability.
I won't however, trade up. I want to keep the the Speedy for some major custom work that I have floating around in my brain.

Dear Mr. Griffin/Silver/Hook/ et al,

We at Triumph Motorcycle LTD fully understand and appreciate your opinion of Harley-Davidson products, as since the year 1990 we have endeavored to provide the public with a superior alternative to their line of motorcycles, T-shirts, coffee mugs, watches, and oh yes, eyepatches, amongst many other such motorcycle related items, and for the most part we believe we have achieved those goals.

And so, at this time, we at Triumph Motorcycle LTD have decided to place your name at the very top of our Eyepatch Awaiting List, because you have demonstrated your great faith in our product line.

(...and because you seem to be such a persistent cuss, too!)

Sincerely,
John Bloor

Gees guys, we were just getting in the mode for upgrading to a Thunderbird, but after all this talk, what the heck, Bob says we are going go whole hog and be real pirates and get an Electra-glide. See we are even dressed for it.

Of course, in order to go for a big bike that rides two up, I would have to quit riding, and that's not going to happen any time soon.

Ok... Take a deep breath... let it out slowly... whatever... here it goes...

I am tired of people saying that they are upgrading, trading-up or graduating to the T-Bird from a Speedmaster or America. Getting a T-Bird is NOT an upgrade. I am tired of asking me if I am going to upgrade, trade up or graduate to a Thunderbird. It is a totally different bike. I love my Speedy. Getting a T-Bird would not be or never would be a better bike for me. It is almost quite insulting to even suggest that it is an upgrade. Personally, I do not like the bike, I don't care for the looks or how it rides (I like that motor). Saying that someone graduated to a T-bird is even more insulting. It's not like the Speedmaster or America is a little Honda Rebel 250 or something. If you get yourself a T-Bird, just say that you found a bike that fits you better and you like it better. It's that simple. It, however is not an upgrade that you trade up to or you finally finished kindergarten and are graduating too like our bike are little training bikes. So, stop insinuating that it is a superior bike, and those of us that love the looks and ride of our Americas and Speedmasters are somehow completely inferior, because we're not.

rant over (mostly)

THATS GREAT!!!

Given Triumph continues to broaden their product offering and increase sales, this ultimately will strengthen the brand and the company. With a stronger brand comes better product offerings, increased R&D and a better future. I am loyal to the Triumph brand and by adding the Thunderbird, they are bringing more potential customers and leveraging the parallel twin motor, something I always have admired. I love my America, but as my riding style changes with longer touring rides, the Thunderbird looks like a great alternative. The best part of the "Thunderbird upgrade" is it gives us options withing the brand if we want them. I applaud Triumph for making this bike and look forward to their continued growth and new product offerings. Just look how cool the new Tiger 800 is. This is a great time to be a Triumph Enthusiast! Just one man's opinion.

Anyone who calls a Tbird an "upgrade" may as well go and get one because quite frankly you are never going to understand.

Even Triumph is calling it an upgrade (given their recent promotional efforts).
Do you think you know or "understand" something Triumph doesn't?

I have taken my Speedy to 25 or so countries and love it to death.
Excluding my own thoughts on the matter and our obvious love for our Speedies and America's, Triumph is calling the Bird an upgrade.

So, what pray, do you possibly think you could explain to me?

Okay then, I will try and say this again. I own a Triumph Speedmaster which in my opinion is the best motorcycle I have ever owned. I have owned many motorcycles in my lifetime so I feel I am pretty knowledgable in this field of what I like about this bike. I have made many changes and customized many things to make it what I want in a motorcycle.

Now this company that originally made this motorcycle has decided to class this bike as a good learners bike and believe me when I say it is good for learners as well. To then make the assumption that everyone who owns these motorcycles are "learners" that need to "upgrade" to a real bike which in my opinion looks like crap, is an insult.

Sure the Tbird has more power and makes a better tourer, I admit that and if that is what you want I am cool with that but it is not an "upgrade" but a step in another direction.

The things I like about the America, Speedmasters and Bonnevilles is that they are retro and I love the engine. I love the way it looks with the twin cylinders being reminiscant of the old twins which I also love. I have no need for the extra power of the Tbird as I also own a 1978 kz1000 that really hauls and is retro. So why does this company now label me as a learner rider because I own and enjoy a motorcycle that they obviously see as somehow being less than a Tbird. They have lost touch my friend.

If I were to buy another motorcycle at the moment I would look at a Thruxton or a T100 and make it cafe racer style so I would have a retro looking sport type motorcycle. I may even lean towards a Norton because I like them too. I do have to stress though that they are not upgrades but merely different motorcycles. A step sideways maybe but not up or down. This "upgrade" thing is what annoys me about Harley riders that believe if you ride anything other than a Harley you have not yet realised and upgraded to their level.

So if you still don't get it, then it dos'nt really matter to me because I get it, I ride it and I live it. You are welcome to ride with me anytime as I don't care what you ride. I only care what I ride. It is a choice, not an upgrade. To be the fastest is not always the coolest or the best.

Everything is relative. The Thunderbird is an upgrade in at least three things: Engine size, number of gears and belt drive. Now that may not be your cup of tea, but it's perfectly valid for someone to call it an upgrade. And doing so doesn't imply our bikes are inferior. They are just fine for the market segment they're intended for. There is another market segment for the Thunderbird, and Triumph is free to advertise it however they want. There is yet another market segment for the Rocket III. Do Thunderbird riders get upset when someone "upgrades" to a Rocket? The Rocket is still much bigger yet than the Tbird, loses a gear but "upgrades" to shaft drive. By all accounts it's worthy of the marketing description "upgrade."

I think people are just afraid that our bikes will start to be considered the "Triumph Sportster," a disposable little bike that is merely a "gateway drug" to bigger and more expensive things.

Don't take it so personally. I personally don't call the Tbird an upgrade, it's just different. And bigger. And requires less final drive maintenance. So what? I still love my bike, but if I could afford more bikes I'd have one of each.

Geez, I don't know if I agree with you there John. The definition of the word implies that it is better and our bikes are inferior. I find it offensive but thats just me.

Well... the third one technically applies. Greater monetary value if not subjective or emotional value. But there's no changing your mind, indeed that was not the intent of my post. Y'all just need to lighten up. The America and Speedmaster have always been the red headed stepchild of the Triumph line. We just didn't have anything else to focus on until 2005 when the Rocket made its debut. And that was so much different than the venerable vertical twin it was off our radar pretty quick. A lot of you are just taking this whole Thunderbird thing like a slap in the face. Life's too short. Go for a ride.

You seem to be annoyed that Triumph "downgraded" you to a learner and made it personal.
You didn't really tell us the elusive secret, other than your preference for retros (you also mentioned the Thruxton and T100)... fair enough, but nothing to do with the point.
In Triumph's cruiser range it has the Speedy/America combo, the T-Bird, and the Rocket.
That's 865cc, then 1600cc and then 2300cc.
Guess which cruiser in the range could possibly be perceived as "entry-level"? (Would you stick a newbie on the T-Bird or the Rocket?).

It also beats me how an upgrade from the Speedy/America combo to the T-Bird is a sideways move, and yet an upgrade to a Rocket is an upgrade (or so I have read on here).
Forgive me but I'm not cross-eyed, so I don't see this so-called "sideways" or "other direction" angle.
The models speak for themselves (whether we like them or not - personally I wouldn't consider the Rocket ... big deal, many others love them).

It's Triumph's cruiser range.
Nothing more... nothing less.

+1 This is my only feeling on the whole subject. I thought you put it well.

The positive side to this campaign is...If they think that will get more folks in the door though, there will be a whole slug of great used low mileage America's and Speedmaster's out there.

I think people are just afraid that our bikes will start to be considered the "Triumph Sportster," a disposable little bike that is merely a "gateway drug" to bigger and more expensive things.

Excellent point, John.
I personally will hopefully never dispose of my Speedy.

My America is exactly why I don't have a Rocket yet. The Rocket is a bag of giggles to ride but it doesn't have the soul or nostalgia that my America has. I'll never get rid of it.

But I'd love to have a Rocket sitting next to it in the garage (but I can't afford one right now).

That would certainly justify your looking "sideways".
Perhaps that's what is meant by ... .
