An America/Speedmaster is not a Sportster that you trade in/sell to get a bigger bike because all the cool kids are picking on you. To me it's the only bike.

It absolutely is that bike you trade up from. The only difference is nobody is teasing you about your Triumph, so there is no need to trade. If they were many would be "trading up". You bought it for its looks and cool factor. At least that is why I bought mine.

I looked at it, fell in love, and thought this is the next generation of way too cool. Drove it around the block, walked into the dealer and bought it.

Mine has not really given me back the love and affection I have given it, but it is not ever for sale. It is still the king of cool to me IMHO>

I also agree upgrading is a bad term. Moving to something that fits you is really all it is. That is why there are so many flavors to pick from.

Very good point and post Soren.

Sorry ol' buddy, but I believe your "alibi" for Mr. Bloor and Co.'s refusal to have ever created a "Super Bonnie" or maybe a "Bonneville S" model does not hold up to scrutiny.

... I believe this because from reports I've read here on this website who have gone the Big Bore route ...

OK, let's scrutinize this by doing the math.
Bloor took the 790 to 865cc.
The big bore is a mere 39 cc's more.

For some of us, it was 114 cc's more, and made quite a difference.

We were talking about my "alibi" for Bloor and what HE did, or didn't do.
He raised the standard displacement to 865cc (in '04), which in terms of what he DID is the standard to measure from, so the cc difference of 39cc is minimal.

I don't think there is any Spumoni or Neapolitan bike.
Most are just chocolate or vanilla, there are some chocolate/vanilla swirls, but if you want the pistachio or strawberry you have to get it separately.
Adding some dulce de leche and/or hot fudge would be an upgrade.

Now I'm hungry
(See what you did Ron, talking flavors).

Since no bike does it all, getting one that better suits your needs may well be an upgrade. But just increasing bowl/scoop size isn't in itself an upgrade unless the individual perceives it as such.

In other words: It's all subjective

And if it's someone else's opinion of your sundae? Who gives a rat's @ss?

As long as it has a bigger engine.

The needs may be subjective.
On a long-distance run (my kind), a less stressed (less buzzing) engine and a more planted bike is not a case of perception.
For that purpose/needs you can be sure it's an upgrade.

EDIT: Bill, on reading your post again I think you got my point covered by your phrase "getting one that better suits your needs may well be an upgrade".

Dear Mr Bloor
Please can I just have 1600cc bike that looks like my TBA?
and while we're about it,please do something about the ugly sprocket cover and put a timing cover on it that looks like a proper triumph cover-every time I see itI want totwist it round a bit till it's upright.
Other than that, dont mess with it.

Thanks
Al

Well the way I look at it is if I have to spend at least $4,000 to $5,000 more than what I spent on my America then it had better be an upgrade.

Now saying that, I do not consider my Tiger an upgrade. It's a totally different bike, which is why I got it. Yes it cost a lot more than my America, but the only common thing between the two bikes is the manufacturer and the fact they both have two wheels. Each bike does what it was intended to do extremely well.

I own BOTH bikes. A 2004 America that looks ABSOLUTELY nothing like stock. I made an old school bobber out of it, and LOVE it like no other. Its a wicked lookin' street sweeper that gets looks everywhere I go (like I care). I fixed it for MY tastes. I bought the Thunderbird so my girl and I could cruise hundreds of miles quite comfortably. We could do this on my America, but choose not to. I don't consider the Thunderbird an upgrade, merely a different animal for a different purpose (BTW, it draws a huge amount of attention too--like I care AGAIN). When I want to wake up the neighborhood and shred some curves, I jump on the bobber. When she and I wanna bust out 300 miles in a day and save our eardrums, we break out the "old man bike". Both are beautiful, both are Triumphs, so who cares? Apparently those who give a crap what other people think...one day I'm also gonna own a Speed Triple, and she's gonna have a red Thruxton. And SOME day the '73 Bonnie on that Ironhead frame sleeping quietly in my garage will be awakened and there's gonna be a Triumph party in Birdtown, North Carolina. Everybody's invited.

and before some people get there shorts in a bunch.. I am not saying there is anything wrong with the Ameica or the speedy..they are great bikes and are what they are ...and if you noticed I just used the word Upgrade..not Graduate because that word means to me .... like you would need more skill to ride the the T-bird Not true....

but there are better components put on the T-bird..
so to me that means Upgrade..

If I'm going to ride a bike that looks like a$$, even if it looks like an America that's been hit with an ugly stick and had extra chrome tacked on, I'll get a Rocket.

<running and ducking>

(and the Rocket III Roadster is cheaper than a big bore Tbird with ABS)

wow, how did I miss this thread for so long?

I know, because for the last 3 days I have been out riding! 2 of those days putting approx 500 miles on the speedmaster (much of it in the twisties at higher than posted speeds) and yesterday a nice 300 mile day with the wife on my 1600 thunderbird (also in the twisties) and in much greater comfort than the small cruiser could bring to the party.

both are great bikes, but way different animals. If one was better than the other I wouldn't have to ride them both.

Actually I am considering an upgrade. Hey Eddy, what kind of deal can you make on Progressive springs and shocks?

I just hit 52,000 miles today after 6 years. While I see the advantages of other bikes in some areas, I would be hard pressed to name an overall better bike for me.

As for the orange and black bikes, there must be a reason that everytime I ride with my brother who has a fully loaded ElectraGlide he always wants to spend the day on my bike.

Well, to each his own I suppose, Ian. And, even though I have to admit your points might be reasonably well taken(the T-Bird was of course acknowledged by Bloor's Boys as being a "Harley Alternative"), I think from that angle(the angle from which most Harley riders will be seeing it ) that Bird with the "Shelby Cobra-esque" blue and white striped paint job looks pretty darn good!

Hmmmm...I wonder how you'd feel about that bike IF that baby had indents on its gas tank? Oh, and of course a kickstarter and a breaker points ignition system too?!

(...oh, and of course some more COOLING FINS!!!)

Ummm...yeah, I suppose so, T-Man. IF, that is, your point is that the '50s era Thunderbirds(a la Brando's bike in "The Wild One") were styled by Mr. Turner to look slightly more, say, "Deco Styled", and in order to appeal more to the American market.

(...is THAT what ya mean?)

I am unable to know if the styling was intentional but it certainly was a popular alternative to Harleys of the day (including Mr Brando's choice of steed ).

Given Harley's model range of today, I doubt it will make any significant dent, but it is/will certainly be looked upon as a respectable alternative.

Given that Harley had dominated the cruiser segment and Triumph were glaringly absent until '02, the same can be said about our Speedys/Americas (the tank console and the Speedy's seat come to mind).
Also, the T-Bird's tank is not that dissimilar to the latter-day Speedy and America tanks.

(...oh, and of course some more COOLING FINS!!!)

I actually like it without the extra dose of fins.
I don't think they've done a bad job with the Bird's engine design.

Uh huh, you might be right there, ol' buddy. Especially, seein' as how Triumph doesn't offer the "option" of a "a Lifestyle" with each and every Thunderbird sold, huh???!!!

Yep, it's certainly hard to compete against THAT in the marketplace of dew rags and the rest of that "Pirate Look Lifestyle", huh?!

HEY, I GOT IT!!! Maybe IF Triumph would start offerin' to each and every new Thunderbird customer a free parrot and eye-patch, THEN maybe some of those H-D riders might be enticed to join our ranks, EH???!!!

(...Mr. Bloor might have to draw the line at a offerin' a ball and cap pistol, though!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Of course, the "Lifestyle" ... a most significant contributing factor.

If I'm going to ride a bike that looks like a$$, even if it looks like an America that's been hit with an ugly stick and had extra chrome tacked on, I'll get a Rocket.

Are you saying this bike has been hit by an ugly stick, John?

Just "axing"

Dear Sirs
Please can you send me my free parrot.....oh and the eyepatch wont be necessary- having ridden Harleys for many a year before my conversion, I clearly no longer need a patch for the temporary blind spot this entailed

My original intent for this thread was not to bash the T-Bird. I wanted to simply say that I am tired of people saying that they are trading-up to, graduating to or upgrading to the T-Bird, like our bikes are some little training bike. No, I dont care for the new T-Bird, but a lot of people do, that is good for Triumph, but not for me. If someone does go from a Speedy or America to a Thundrbird, it a step side-ways (with a bigger motor) not up. It is something completely different.
