Painted the dash console. First coat of Krylon plastic Black Gloss, nice. Second coat looks real good! One coat of Krylon" gas and oil resistant" clear coat, purdy. One final coat of clear....what the heck! Crap turned to spiderweb. Looks like a wrinkle finish. Not exactly the look I was going for. What caused the web effect? Instructions said to, recoat within 1 hour or recoat after 24hr. Misses wanted to go out for burgers, so I recoated when we returned, about 2hrs. Bummer.

Enough Said
As with many projects I have attempted, I soon learnt that it is always advisable to read and carefully follow the instructions from the start.

Like many of my own mistakes... some I consider learning experiences and know that I will be a better man for it... others I just finally decide to do the right thing and blame someone else.

I have had the same results following the directions to a tee with clear coat.Humidity is a big bugger with clear coats as is temp.Lightly sand the finish and try again. This is why good painters make good money.

Well Mike , before two hours , the polymers are still somewhat solubilized in the vehicle , and not quite cured , so the next app. just dissolves back in . After that though , a "skin" develops and the second app. will wrinkle that . And after 24 hours , the vehicle has evaporated and rendered the finish impervious to the same solvent that just evaporated . You just got stuck in the middle .
Sometimes ya gotta just shrink down to a molecular level to figure out stuff .
Wrinkle finish is good .

Probably not a time issue, but a problem with two different kinds of paints (i.e. laquer and enamel).

yeah sometimes different paints hate each other.
krylons crap though dude for future reference.
I painted my dash with a whole can of rustoleum satin black, no clear coat or anything, 3 years ago, multiple gallons of gasoline spilled since, not one problem.

I had this exact problem when I was repainting my fron fender last winter - even following the directions to a T. I was using Krylon and after several attempts finally sanded it all down and used a Dupli-Color automotive spray paint. Once I switched to Dupli-Color the problem went away.

I made a blast cabinet out of a 55 gallon drum. The kind with a band clamp to remove the whole lid. I cut a square window in the side and made a wood frame that I can slide a plexi window in and out of so I can change that as it gets pitted. I cut a round hole above that that I riveted the aluminum shade for one of those clip on work lights to for light. I ran my blaster hose through the threaded hole in the end and I attached old jacket sleeves to 2 round holes I cut under the window. It works great and catches the sand for re-use. I set it on saw horses when in use.

The clearcoat was not the same kind of paint. The effect is called orange peel.

You are correct but the first coat of clear was slick, only the second coat blistered.
