Hey Guys. The quake was centred around Christchurch in the Sth Island. We felt it up in Wanganui. No noise just shaking. Down South a lot of the older brick buildings have been damaged. Nobody killed so far that I know of. Water pipes and sewage have been damaged with flooding in lower areas. There are 2 plates that move in opposite directions. They moved up to 10metres they are saying. A few fires are burning. There has been a bit of looting and there is a night-time curfew in the shopping centre. Power was cut and cell phone towers ran on batteries for a time.
Up the coast a light plane crashed at Fox Glacier killing 9, but this was unrelated to the quake.

Hopefully they won't find any folks that didn't make it. So very sad. And the looters---why do these low lifes have to take advantage of others at a time like this.

Glad to know you're ok. Our thoughts are with you.

Wow...

It's the first time I hear about quakes in New Zealand. Do you get a few there?

From the newspaper, seems like people fared better than architecture. From the looks of it, I see most of those buildings were not reinforced against earthquakes.

Here in Taiwan, we get a lot of them, my strongest so far has been 6.1 I can imagine that a 7.1 had to shake quite a bit! Over here they say that many little quakes are better then a big one once a while.

Kiwis, take care!
