We don't know the whole story but when you bring a gun to a fist fight, you generally get into a lot of trouble.
You are required to retreat until it is not a viable solution before you can shoot him. Most folks don't keep trying to hit you when you have a gun pointed at them.
I have always said that having a gun in many cases makes a reasonable person brave a few seconds too long. Without the gun they would have divorced themselves from the situation before it degraded.
Disclaimer: I am a very strong 2nd amendment supporter. Cause I am sure somebody is poised over their keyboard to get into this one.
