They are vinyl! The only storage I use now is a small tank bag and a Tourmaster bag on the luggage rack. Saddle bags would cost as much or more and the "friend" offers the back rest. I'm mostly into short trips around the rural roads of South Central Va and North Carolina so comfort is more important than storage.
