Okay I figure if Mark can pull Kimmy's carbs I can lube my speedo.Anyway about a month ago my speedo cable snapped.Found one on e-bay for $15.00.My question is, what would I use for lubrication before I install it on the bike? Thank you my friends.

Just an old Hippie and I don"t know what to do.

What's this forum coming to? First someone wants to lube gators and now this... LUBING A SPEEDO!! Wrong forum guys. This one's for motorcycles.

But as far as treating that cable goes... I'd pull it out, coat it with gear grease, then put 'er back.

Live to love, love to live.

I am going to say that if it is already lubed with some kind of grease, use white lithium grease. If it is a dry lube, use graphite powder.

I disagree, the saltwater mix will wear it out quicker

When I had mine apart the wheel hub end had what seemed like vasoline in it where the worm and drive gear mesh. I don't remember any lube on the cable but it may have been a dry lube as Soren suggested.

Hope this helps. NR

Why is it that stuff goes south the day before a road trip? Riding to Manning SC today. Taking the long way, well, adding two hours not 4000 miles.

Vera Lynn's speedo cable snapped yesterday. I swapped out Cinnamon Girl's. CG's cable was greasy with something. Vera's was dry and dusty with rust. What to do? Had some gun oil. Used that to wet CG's cable. Wiped it off, then used high temp brake grease (laying around). Lubed cable with that. Then installed CG's cable on Vera Lynn. More like coating with a rust barrier than lubing...

$15? Wow! Bike Bandit nows has $39 of mine. Tried Pinwalls to no avail.

Heck Soren, you already gave him a decent answer.
But here's my $0.02: Dri-Slide® molybdenum disulfide. Dry lubes won't attract dirt, and they won't harden with age.

Just received my new speedo cable from the bandits. This new cable is lubed with a clear grease of some sorts and manufactured February 16, 2010.

Feels like white lithium grease
Smells like white lithium grease
Taste like white lithium grease

Hum, good thing we not step in it.

Let' eat!

Seriously, the cable will be sealed at both ends so why a dry lube? An o-ring on the pickup side and lotsa threads on the speedo side.

Begs the question of why Vera Lynn's cable was so dry? Did the white lithium grease dry up after 8 years? So indeed we have one cable that requires a wet lube. Thanks for the Dri-Slide® molybdenum disulfide mention. So where can I purchase a tin of that for garage use?

LPS sells the stuff in an aerosol for chains/cables. I wouldn't use it as a chain lube though since it is black and flings but in a speedo cable....should work.

Not wanting to hijack the thread.

If I disconnect the cable at the back of the speedo, will the inner simply pull out of the outer cover?

Thanks Bill,

I disconnected the cable at the speedo and tried to pull the inner out with my fingers, No Go.
I was a little dubious about pulling to hard in case I broke something.
I will give it another go tomorrow.

Not 100% sure but I think the cable pulls out the bottom not the speedo end. There is a barrel like part on the lower end that engages the drive at the wheel if I remember right. That barrel part would prevent pulling the inner part out through the top.
