First night I planned to camp at Lake Lowndes State Park, MS. However due to the Labor Day holiday they require a 3 night minimum stay. Yes even for primitive camping.

Title should be Lake Lowndes State Park rant!

Turns out Jeff Busby NP on the Natchez Trace Parkway mile post 193.1 has free camping.

And I love the Natchez trace parkway as much as free camping.

You can try Elkview Campground they are only 6 or 7 miles east of Sturgis off of I-90. During Sturgis they charged $19.50 per night, so it might be less during none rally dates.

$8 per night at the Elk View is not too bad. Thanks for the recommendation as the Elk View was one of the places I was considering being that intersection is loaded (Rush no more, Bulldog, No Name).

Another place is Roubaix Lake - Deadwood, South Dakota where camping is free from a week after Labor Day to a week before Memorial Day. I wonder if the Saturday after Labor Day is within that week?

Too bad I'll only be riding it for 15 miles. I almost headed North on the Natchez a couple of years back on my way to the AK rally in Eureka Springs. Heading West just East of Jackson, I saw the sign and had not really a clue as to what it was. Then again it does diagonal in the wrong direction...

bambis are wusses. wait till I encounter elk and such out West!

seriously, I hear you about the wildlife Troy. Was talking to a guy yesterday who was saying the speed limit is majorly enforced on the Natchez Trace too. He also says the ride to Jeff Busby is a two day ride. So couple the need to ride after dark with the pole dancers er deer and Saturday is going to be an interesting day! whiskey, peanut butter and crackers at Jeff Busby round midnight: priceless!

Around the Sturgis area Elk & Deer are definitely a problem, but they don't linger around the roads as much as Bison (Buffalo) do. The Bison also like to defecate on the roads (Buffalo Chips), which you really want to avoid.

Yeah, I was in Ranger class with a few guys from NT Parkway..... long long ago and it was strictly enforced then too. If you go through Custer State Park in SD you will see most every large animal in that part of the world, sometimes too upclose and personal.

Didn't see any Buffalo until we got to the southern part of Custer State Park. Actually ran into even more of them after leaving Custer State Park heading down SD79 on our way to Wind Cave National Park. The picture I posted was taken on SD79. When we came upon that small herd Jeff was in the lead and a Bull came out of the woods in full sprint and ended up chasing him down the road for about 60 yards. I wish I could have taken a picture of his express looking back at the bull and hitting the gas.
