When a 790 cc motorbike dies in mid-stream, you want to check the fuel level. I'm just sayin' ......... jh

No stones..........I was simply making an innocent open-ended mechanical observation that might benefit one of the assembled members &/or lurkers in this neighourhood someday. Besides "got gas" pretty much summarizes my knowledge of things with spark plugs and moving parts. Besides I figured if anyone took personal umbrage it'd be Dwight 1 &/or 2 jh

Forgetting to put down the kick-stand is embarrassing, er, I mean, I imagine that it would be embarrassing.

All I could do was watch in horror as he fell into my bike. But, all's well that ends well (how's that thumb?).

Ditto! Ran out of gas for the first time in 60k miles on the way to work Monday. Good thing i was able to coast to within 50 yards of a gas station. Funny thing is it only showed 127 miles on the odometer. I can't figure that one out. I ride her hard and she's never gotten that poor mileage before... I usually hit reserve around 130-140 miles and have ridden over 20 miles on reserve before. Maybe this crappy gas they're selling now evaporates quicker in the summer heat???

a few weeks ago I was working on the carbs. you know, drain them, change jets, start up , repeat, etc... after an hour on tinkering I went for a ride. I already live out in the sticks and after going about 3 miles further, the bike dies, no gas, a quick check, its already on reserve. (many bad words used) I can hear that there is still gas in the tank though. With some creative rocking of the bike I can see gas running into the clear filter, when I figure I have the bowls and filter full I started up and rode about half way home. In fact I made it right to the bottom of the long steep hill that I live on the other side of! I call (cell phone) everybody that I can think of who might be of immediate help, no answers. I did not realize just how heavy that speedmaster is after about a 1/2 mile uphill push. Anyways I made it to the top coasted down the other side and made it home. And then had a couple of beers, because just as I made the dead stick landing into the driveway the rain started. While rehydrating with the beer, I get the return calls asking if I still need help with bike.

So let me see if I've got this straight. Someone we know may or may not have left the reserve on and ran outta gas, or was it a vapor lock! This same person may or may not have forgot to use the kick stand and fell into another members bike. sounds like a fun time was had Hey bartender, another round will ya!

One of several reasons I always turn the gas off before I switch the key off and back on before I switch the key on. I never park my bike with the gas tuned on, a stuck or faulty float system could put gas into the crankcase or fill the air box if you have one. If not then spill all over. Then when I get back on and turn the gas on I know what way it's turned and then turn the key on.

Isn't this how most of these problems begin in the first place?
Semi-related story: Stepson takes a dirtbike he's looking to buy on a test ride. Gets a couple blocks away and calls to say the ****** thing stalled and won't start. I ask him if the gas it on. "oops, no, DAMMIT!"

While not perfectly accurate, that's sort of how it went (emphasis on 'fell into another member's bike).

I'm as mystified as you Gregger. I posted a simple cheque the fuel tank observation for the good of the order and a stream of mea culpas followed.
