It's not really useless. Pull in the clutch, give a blip of the ol' throttle to try and match the RPMs of the oncoming gear. Sometimes a downshift can be absolutely seemless... that's when ya got 'er just right! Less strain on the drive train and as you implied John... a whole lot of fun if ya got nice pipes!!
+1 and I also crack the throttle just before I let the clutch out from a stop. I have always done this so not sure if it matters on our bikes but it did on the old bikes. It made pulling out smoother and down shifting smoother. I have been in the habit so long I just do it now.
