I've noticed this sometimes when I am at a stop light - when the light goes green for me as I try to pull away the engine will sometimes stall. I can start the bike right up (except for those times when for some strange reason I think the horn button is the start button  ). It seems to happen when I have run the bike awhile, say on the freeway from my town to Seattle (30 miles). I have learned to "goose" the engine (rev it) a bit just before I take off from the stop and then there's no problem. I have heard other riders do this as well, and thought it was just for show. Is this something with air-cooled engines? Thanks for your help.

try setting the idle just a bit higher and it wont stall.. i burp the throttle as well.. especially if some jerk is on the cell phone while waiting for the light ..

I'll finger er goose it too. Don't know the technical details but it does ensure a tight response when you put a load on it. What is it doing? Loading up at idle a bit? So flushing the fuel with a blip of the throttle gets a good baseline back is all.

Thanks everyone for your comments!  Moe, to answer your question, it seems that there is no throttle response in this situation - so when I let the clutch out and apply throttle the engine stalls.

I also blip the throttle when downshifting. Absolutely useless but the bark from the Specialty Spares make me giggle like a Japanese schoolgirl.

It's not really useless. Pull in the clutch, give a blip of the ol' throttle to try and match the RPMs of the incoming gear. Sometimes a downshift can be absolutely seemless... that's when ya got 'er just right! Less strain on the drive train and as you implied John... a whole lot of fun if ya got nice pipes!!

+1 and I also crack the throttle just before I let the clutch out from a stop. I have always done this so not sure if it matters on our bikes but it did on the old bikes. It made pulling out smoother and down shifting smoother. I have been in the habit so long I just do it now.

Lance, Id agree with kicking the idle up a bit. Id also suggest checking the play in your throttle cable. If you have too much play it may not be responding as fast as you like.

it doesnt sound as cool w/ a slightly higher idle.. but the improved stability and fun factor go way way up.. w/o getting stuck at the light ... once she settles in agree .. check for play in the cable adjusters..smile smile smile

surely you have to be rolling the throttle on as you release the clutch - otherwise the engine will stall!

Yes, I am rolling the throttle. There is just that point initially when there doesn't seem to be a response from the engine, and the engine will stall. If I blip the throttle beforehand however, no such problem.

You could also try turning out the pilot screw a little to richen the mixture. These bikes are set up realy lean from the factory and will occasionally die at idle when not fully warmed up.
