I should preface this question with I'm a beginner and play for pleasure. The music I attempt to play is blues and rock. Have any of you folks played the Fender Stratocaster Standard? It's made in Mexico (quality???) . Should I opt for the more expensive made in USA models?

For beginning, I think a less expensive guitar is fine, you can always upgrade later if you decide to keep going with it. I have an Ibanez SoundGear bass, and it's fine for playing around casually. Save your money. Just my 2¢.

Definitely save the money. Buy more expensive guitars when you're certain you'll be playing for years to come.

Be sure (BE SURE) to buy a guitar with a solid top, and NOT a plywood top. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a solid top... it's just that they sound so much better without having to break the bank. I say this as a guitar player of 40 years.

I WANTED something that would last for years. However, it would make more sense to buy something less expensive given my playing abilities. Is there any reason why I should avoid a value pack for $350?

I had an Ibanez "RG" series, and among all the guitars I've owned, this axe was HOT....Floyd Rose, double humbuckers, locking head...that was one sweet guitar...Much more "playable" for me than the Strats.....

Well let's see....When I was growing up not unlike a bunch of other players on here can attest the cheap guitars were made in Japan. And with a few exceptions, they were Crap!!.Theses days an inexpensive guitar does'nt mean junk.
Example: I recently bought myself a Mexican made Strat,Cost about $425.00 with gig bag etc.Several years ago I bought a Fender Afinity Strat for my son cost about $135.00.The differnce is negligible.
For a new player like yourself play a bunch of different guitars and ultimately you'll find the right one.And when you find it you'll know. For inexpensive guitars with great playability fit and finish check out Jay Turser guitars, however they are made in China.
It's kinda like when you knew your Triumph was right for you.
I've been playing about 40 years and at present own 12 guitars.Just my 2 cents.

Just an old Hippie and I don"t know what to do.

They are good, fairly well built guitars but you need to play a few to find the one that sounds best as the sound quality can vary quite a bit.

So I'm reading all the posts here and I realize... oh, we're talking about electric guitars. Duh... and in my post I talked about solid vs. plywood tops and I think, what an idiot! Get with the program!!

But if you're buying an acoustic, make it a solid top (as if THAT can redeem me!) Lol!!!

The Mexican Strats are very good quality IMO. Yes, I would say it's a good one to start out with. I just picked up an SX Strat (made in China, sold through Rondo Music). For $119 it is a fantastic guitar. Very good quality, and finish is extremely nice. I'm having the tuners upgraded, and a proper set up (needed for any new guitar), and it should be even better.

You don't need to pay a lot to start bluesing! Have fun!

What a difference a day makes. It's hard to justify spending $1000-$1500 on a guitar, amp and effects pedal after five months of playing. Now I'm leaning toward the value packs. Originally my thinking was if I bought a cheap guitar, it would be easier to walk away if frustration sets in. Thats hard to do if I invest a lot of money into something. It seems as though every guitar player has a beater and a good guitar. So, I'll do the prudent thing and get a beginner guitar. Then, once I get past Twinkle Twinkle, I'll buy a better one.

Yeah Ive been playing for about 10 years now and still cant justify spending more than $500 for a guitar. I usually look for expensive guitars that are used so its the same price of a brand new cheaper guitar.

But like others have said, when youre learning you barely know what a TUNED guitar sounds like, let alone a really good one.

Those starter kits are alright, but I would take that same amount of loot and buy something used maybe a bit better. This way you got a chance of selling it for what you bought it for, if you decide to quit playing. Guitars and amps dont lose their value really that fast. If you get a good deal, then another guy will want that deal later if you quit.

or any of the Squier classic vibe or vintage modified guitars. cheaper guitars but very good quality. i own a mexi strat and a Squier vm thinline tele (which i play 99% of the time)both great quality . if your looking for a decent practice amp, the vox pathfinder is a wicked wee amp .i have a line 6 spider III amp ,decent enough, but to be honest i hate to play guitar that loud ,it only lets everyone know how lousy a player i really am

Have to agree, a Gary Levinson Blade is a fantastic guitar. Expensive when new as I believe they are hand made ( years ago I bought a Blade Texas Custom new for around £750 - not sure what you would have payed in the States), but if you shop around you could find a fantastic guitar at a budget price.

Celt knows where to get his guitars!

I got mine there, which is the SX SST57 in Vintage White, which was the best $119 I have spent. Like I said earlier, a set of better tuners will make this guitar even better.

As Celt notes, Fender's Classic Vibe series are good values, and get great reviews. I almost got one of these, until I saw the SX.

I don't really like any of the "Value Packs" from Fender or Ibanez out there. They are OK, but I would spend just a bit more to get a better amp.

I think you have to decide first if you want a guitar with a floating bridge (whammy bar Strat style) or fixed bridge like a Telecaster. I went with a fixed bridge style guitar.Looked at SX Tele's for a cheapy. Not a bad guitar and definately upgradeable. In the end I found a brand new Parker P42 for a little bit more that I dont have to change a thing on.Play's beautifully too, just wish I could do it justice.Gotta start somewhere.

Are you REALLY sure you want a Strat? Is it purely for aesthetics or tone? It may be a good idea if you researched the tonal differences between single coil & Humbucker pickups (pups) before making a purchase - 2 completely different tones.

Yep.Good advice.
That's what I loved about the Parker.Humbuckers with a coil tap to split them to single coil.

Finally, I selected a guitar. So much for doing research on guitars BEFORE going out and field testing them. The value packs that were given a good rating on websites turned out to be less than desireable in person. I was pretty much convinced that a Strat was for me until I picked up this Schecter Omen 6. Liked the quality, tone and the way it felt in my hands. It didn't break the bank either.

That is a great guitar company. now if you want to make a differance insound, you need to take that guitar to the store with you and play in a bunch of different amps. Tube is always warmer and better sounding(imho) but pretty high dollar. I have ussed many diff solid state amps since the 80s. so far the best one (and this will surprise you) was my Marshall Lead 12. It was a 15 watt amp but boy did it screem. add another speaker to it and its was unbelievable!
used a Crate chours amp and a Laney 30watt. The laney was great, now Im using a berhinger GMX 1x12. is a 60 watt amp.

it was best bang for the buck,

starter pack amps are for kids, even a deacent beginner wants to hit a E5 at level 10 and hold it!

enjoy!

PS, still like was said in here, have it set up. (dress the frets, intionation ect.)

I have an Epiphone SG the middle model, and had the thing set up and a Lynch screemon deamon pick up installed. now it plays like its much more expensive gibson brother.

Well, due to home improvement projects, I'm putting off the amp purchase. If I come home with another "toy", the wife will shoot me. After we get some of the expenditures out of the way, I'll put on man pants and select an amp. Thinking about a 15 watt practice amp (Marshall, Line 6 or Fender).

you cant go wrong with the Marshall. A friend of mine has a Peavey vyper 30. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Peavey-Vypyr-30-30W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp-104922869-i1413606.gc

for 100 less is the 15w. line 6 is good if you want some toys included, as w/ the peavy. that way your wife wont see you spending 20 to 50 to 150 here and there on stomp boxes

This is mine. http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/GMX112.aspx

The 2x12 is not discontinued. http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHGMX212

but if your like me no matter what the amp can do i still have the need for my stomp boxes!

once again, take your guitar to the music store and see what you like.

Behringer, Line 6... VERY good bang for the buck. I run a Roland Cube 30 and LOVE it!
