The wifey had an event this last week in Vegas, so I flew there for the weekend following my business in Florida. Las Vegas never was "my town," but it's gotten way worse. Granted, it was on a beautiful weekend, and the Mayweather/Mosely fight was on Saturday, but I have seldom seen as many drunken reprobates in one place at one time in my life. It was literally a sea of people on LV BLVD in mid-afternoon, and most of them were sloshed. One staggering nitwit was leaning against his buddy as he stumbled down the street with a half gone bottle of whiskey taped to his hand. Yes, I know. There are a lot of things to see and do in Vegas, but next time, I'll go on a weekday if possible and avoid the weekend. A draft beer at the Aria (new hotel casino next to the City Center) cost 9 bucks.

Oh, and for you "Pawn Stars" fans? The actual store was a major disappointment. A third of the place is devoted to "Pawn Stars" souvenirs (mostly Chumly autographed stuff), and none of the guys on the show were there. We also got a parking ticket (20 bucks) for parking in the wrong lot on the other side of the store. I bought a Chumly fridge magnet. What can I say?

Oh, and why don't they do something about the (mostly) latino hawkers reaching out to give hooker promo cards at every corner? It's not the hooker cards so much as the fact they all seem to end up on the ground and it then looks like the sidewalk is literally paved with hooker cards. Not that I'd bring a kid to Vegas, but come on...

The monorail for getting around was convenient, but it was way under used by anyone.

The "ding-ding-ding-ding" in the stinky, smoky casinos got annoying (except when it was my machine making the noise, of course).

My theory on Vegas is that it's a lot of fun when one is in their 20's, but after that, it just sucks the energy out of ya. After two days, I was way ready to leave. I much prefer Reno - especially during the air races.

I'm turning into an old fart!!!

Oh, lastly, my flight out of Ft. Lauderdale had the R/H engine poop the bed very loudly at about minutes after takeoff and we had to turn around and do an emergency landing back at FLL on one engine. THAT got my attention, but at least they gave us free drinks and peanuts (and a voucher for a future flight) for our troubles. Iuess I shouldn't complain too much, huh?

No, no, no John. It's a wonderful place. Come, spend (?) money, help our economy. What you experienced was surely an aberration.

Actually as a resident, I seldom venture near the tourist corridor. For the very reasons you mentioned plus some more, and fight weekends are some of the craziest (I'm sure Bill P will have some commentary since that's his bailiwick).

But you were here, and missed the SWTF in nearby Prescott?

Geeze JC, you scared me outta ever going there... especially after mentioning the age thing. And besides, being from a small town nestled deep in the mountains I can only imagine being a major hazard to myself in a place like that. Probably wouldn't survive a day!!

We've got a casino up the road. I refer to it as the "money funnel", i.e., it sucks money out of the pockets of the "little people" and deposits it into the hands of a few at the top. I've been to it twice. Once, just to see what it was like. The second time as part of the celebration of my Aunt's birthday. Spent no money the first time. Ten bucks the second. It is a really weird place. People sitting around noisy machines, with a blank, dead look on their face. Not my cup of tea. Ever.

Gotta say I agree with Rich. We have all kinds of riverboat casinos here in the St. Louis area, I think I went once when I was 21 and one other time for some reason I don't recall.... anyway, I didn't lose much, maybe 20 bucks a time, but I have no desire to go back. Playing poker with friends in a basement is much more fun and rewarding, especially when you can take their money and then talk smack about it!

I lived in Vegas for almost a year, besides the weather and cheap food, I didnt care for it much. I moved just after the Excalibur got built.

John, you hurt my feeling....I only have one and was saving it for a special occasion, but whatev

Vegas is not for everyone(not even me after this weekends mess and filth)

Come back Mayweather, pretty please.....we miss you (and your fans/animals) already.....NOT!!!Guns ,drugs and hookers....whats not to love

Fight weekend is not the best time to visit,it brings a crappy quality crowd and Mayweathers fans are currently the worst. It used to be the Tyson crowd.I hate fight weekend to begin with and it was the same weekend as SWTF......double boo.

Vegas is geared towards a younger crowd these days. The days of 99c shrimp cocktails are almost gone. Fremont street is the last of that old Vegas vibe.

I work in the clubs so am immune to the shenanigans of drunken *uckwits its an everyday occurrence for me so I don't even notice anymore.

People coming to Vegas are generally coming here to get drunk, gamble and to attempt to get laid....you can spin it however you want but thats the facts. There are a lot of things to do other than that but not many ever discover that.

Never, and I mean never bring children to vacation here. Its boring for them and the strip at night is not an appropriate environment. It never ceases to amaze me seeing children being dragged around a casino at 4AM.The best part is when we are arresting some dumbas* and the parents stop(with the kids) to gawk at the side show....how stupid do you have to be?

I totally agree with you about the outcall cards being handed out on the strip,it makes a mess and the illegals who hand them out will try and hand them to anyone, guys with there kids/wives....whatever they don't care. But,dear friends that is free speech at work. The casinos campaigned to stop them and succeeded until they were sued but the flier guys.Fliers won because its a public street and thats free speech....I know, how stupid is that?

I generally love living in Vegas(I know its not for everyone).I work on the strip and live in the burbs. The best of both worlds if you ask me.

Well, I did gamble, and I did get laid, so I guess I got 2/3 of the Vegas experience. I agree that it probably wasn't the best weekend to be there, but that's the one it ended up being.

On a high note, I visited the Car Collection at the Oriental Palace and enjoyed that tremendously. More Rolls Royces in one place than I can ever recall seeing. Just beautiful. I also got in free by showing my military ID.

Except for the wind, it was lovely weather, as well.

I'm all about the "free speech" thing, but the booty-call card hawkers should be held accountable for the litter on the sidewalks. Just my humble opinion.

I'm actually leaving tomorrow morning for vegas and I CAN'T WAIT! I love vegas, but like billp I love gambling and booze. Not so much the hookers though(married and she'll be there, haha). I enjoy just wondering around as well. I'm thinking about renting a harley(I know) on Friday and blasting through the desert somewhere since we don't have much of that here in the big NH.

Funny thing is the guy hawking is not the guy littering. The guy littering is the guy that traveled there of his own free will.

A lot of the people come from very poor underdeveloped States with little to no class. They immediately become more stupid than they normally are.

"Lookit Bubba! we can see a gurl wit all her teeph and shaved legs! Ain't never seen one of them other than in picture shows."

They never saw anything like that at the Tyson factory or in Wal-Mart. Shakes em up so bad they get drunk, wet their pants, and throw papers on the sidewalk.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. The trash, and the money that is. The classless stump-jumpers go back home.

Its a collective effort. I am sure LV thanks us all for our contributions.

As a born and bred Texan who has lived in Arkansas for a number of years- thats funny. I think we get the same crowd in our tourist town. They're from Miss. and Kentucky.

Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

That is right, Wal-Mart and Tyson are based in your State. I just looked it up.

I am not fighting. Did I hurt your feelings? I am sorry, I should know better than to say something that someone may take as insensitive about where they live. I didn't mention your State though. Tyson and Wal-Mart are in most places. Now that you bring it up.

Hurt my feelings? You're kidding, right? You must not have noticed the little winky icon that I added to let you know I was just joking.

Many Arkansans actually encourage out of staters to think of us as backwards hillbillies. It keeps our population to a reasonable level by discouraging transplants from other states moving here. We're 33rd in the nation for population, and TX is 2nd. I like that ratio just the way it is.

I must admit I was totally in awe of going to Vegas.

I've been a few places that yo think would have been pretty impressive and failed to deliver but I think I was totally amazed by the set up of the casinos and shows there.

Err I actually got married in Las Vegas, something a lot of Brits don't actually do.

And I met Elvis as well. Sandy didn't think he was Elvis but I knew he was.

I noticed your little wink thing. Just after the Enron comment. I was just checking to make sure we had more than Enron in Texas. You worried me for a minute. I thought maybe we were out of business opportunities.

Back to L.V. Its an incredible city with the best entertainment in the world 7 days a week. Good food, great lodging, excitement 24/7 and it rains about once a decade.
