I don't think the pump will cut off, I've been surprised how full the tank is when I've stopped fueling, the fuel being on a level with the wire thingy.
Just a wild guess here, presuming the older models don't have the wire thingy, maybe its to stop the nozzle going too far in and damaging something inside? Like the pump or fuel gauge?
