This chain guard is up in the front, and .yes. i know its stock, but do you have any ideas why this is rared up like that. i am not using the buddie pegs,I was curious, maybe someone here, had lowered this down in the front , if not i will have to correct that. looks really outa place doesn't it???? let me know please

Hmm, my guess might be that when you actually sit on the bike it will go down due to your added weight, shocks loading and gravity - it will align closer. I may be wrong though.

No I think it will stay right there no matter what one does.and i may have to shorten the front bracket, and re-chrome it.

OK, you do realize that the chain will flop up/down as you ride? If you shorten the front you will break it off pretty quick as the chain keeps pounding against it. Then the broken chain guard could possibly get caught up in your real wheel, causing you make the bike look like the "Before" pictures all over again.

Its probably supposed to follow the line of the swingarm, not the chain. You're probably looking at it up on the lift, it will look better on the ground.

Watch those chrome guards anyway, there have been quite a few failures, one that I know of was a very dangerous situation.

The way i look at the picture. It appears to me that the whole set-up chain and all go up and down simltaneously. ...but once she hits the ground, and it settles in it may be a different story.
I did ride the bike down to the end of my driveway[long drive]and it operated excellent. other than a miss from carb setting around awhile lon

You do know to only adjust the chain with the bike on the ground and check tension in several spots rolling the bike back and forth? If you don't do that you can misadjust it since you want about 1/2" to 1" of play at the tightest spot. The adjustment will be wrong if done on the lift since the tension changes once set down and the rear suspension moves.

I always thought that chain guard looks too short. I ended up just taking it off which cleaned up the look imo.

brake or break? I think that they did this just in case you have a chain get way to loose before you find out.And then it would rip the guard all to pieces,but as was mentioned, it does look to short also. because in theroy it goes up and down with the swing arm as a whole.

Right, the chain guard is attached to the swingarm; however, the chain will slacken as the suspension is compressed while riding, bumps, curves etc. As the chain slackens centrifugal force will increase the distance between the bottom of the chain and the top, that is it will become a little more circular and you will need the space afforded by the OEM placement of the chain guard to avoid having the chain hit the guard.
Oh. And if it does break it may have an effect like locking the rear brake

Fwiw, the last dyno I had done, I couldn't help notice how the chain was moving up and down in an almost slow motion type of way even though the bike was on the flat dyno wheel.
Coincidently it appeared to move the full inch I had it adjusted to which is obvious I know but the funny thing was, it didn't need any bumps or dips in the road which for some reason I thought it'd need.
My point is, the chain will move up as far as it's adjustment will let it regardless of road conditions and so if it's not adjusted properly it will move the full extent of it's play anyway and will hit the chain guard if not adjusted properly.
Staintune Pipes, K&N Pods, 45 pilots, TBS needles and 145 mains.

Staffo.from the way i look at it....[i'm big on maintenance keeping things looking and acting like they should.]The chain would do as you say ,and what i thought. So.I can bring this guard down ......maybe enuff to make it look like it was designed to be there.. Instead of it being a last minute after thought!........ when installed on all the BAs..I will check on lengthening of it now. thank you Staffo appreciate the insight

Ummm...Well Bob, I'm guessin' here that Moe thinks you're "not exactly" LISTENIN' to what almost EVERYBODY was TRYIN' to TELL YA here...and THAT WAS to LEAVE that friggin' CHAIN GUARD ALONE!!! (ya see..."That deaf, dumb and blind kid" up there might sure play a mean game of pinball, BUT as far as I remember, he didn't ride a motorcycle in that rock opera, so DON'T be like Tommy there UNLESS you've got your fingers on those flipper buttons on one of those pinball games!!!)

The Chain guard sure ends up too high then the natural line. It also ends up too short ( supposedly "hidden" by the peg hanger ).
That said. I wouldn't mess with it either, But I think it looks wrong as well.

Yep jass, the chain guards on our bikes are not the best lookin' things bolted onto 'em, and they especially look too short, as you said, after some of us have removed those original ugly-azz passenger foot peg holders that were designed to mimic the old tool boxes on 1930 era Triumphs. And so, what I did years ago after removing said ugly-azz "'30's tool box inspired"(okay, so maybe the word "insprired" there was a wrong choice of words) passenger peg holders, was to rivet about 3 or 4 inches of right-angled stainless steel sheet metal to the front of the chain guard going forward, so that it extends to behind where the sidecover sits, and thus makes it look a little less like it's just stuck on there willy-nilly, and to give it the look like it's flowing from under that area and back to the rear sprocket! And then I re-painted it all black, as I have never liked chromed chainguards on ANY motorcycle, because...why would anyone want to draw attention to a part of any motorcycle that first, isn't usually a "pretty part" of any motorcycle, and secondly, especally our model's chain guards, which are among the ugliest out there anyway! Yep, it's kind'a like how I could never wrap my little noggin around the idea on why ANYBODY would purposely add that chromed cover on that ugly-azz and ill-positioned rear brake reservoir that's sittin' out there in plain sight on the front of our bikes TOO!!! (no offense to those folks who have those things on their bikes around here, of course)

I have considered it, Dwight. I've also come to the conclusion that it won't happen. It's not that I don't want to. It's that I'm all tied up right now trying to get my chain guard out of my chain. It just didn't look right before - It really looks bad now, but a lot better than my leg!

OH! So, I take it YOUR chain guard has broken TOO, huh?! Yep, well, mine finally broke at the back a while back where, you know, that itty-bitty little mounting point extends down to the back of the swing-arm. And so, once again, I did a little "surgery" to it, and riveted another piece of sheet metal behind that point and then re-bolted it up. Yep, as has been mentioned before around here by more than a few folks, these chain guards appear to be a bit weak and under-engineered, whether they're chromed or not. However, a couple months ago I purchase another stock black chain guard from damien around here, but haven't as of yet gotten around to switchin' that extended piece I talked about above onto it and boltin' that sucker onto my bike.

I still say it's not a bad idea to just get rid of the chain guard. I think it really cleans up that area... Now, as for your thoughts Dwight, of not wanting to draw attention to that part of the bike, well I can understand your thinking. I (we)'ve all seen some pretty ugly accumulation of gunk and dirt back there, enough to constitute an eyesore. And yet I went the opposite by exposing the chain to it's fullest then adding colour to that otherwise drab and dreary part of the bike. With today's lubricants there need not be any fling and keeping the chain clean is no big deal. So, getting back to the chain guard... yeah I agree DEFINITELY DON'T modify it but consider yanking it and calling it a day!!

Yep, gotta admit that's kind'a pretty there, Keith. I have one o' those gold-anodized chains on mine.
Did you paint that chain yourself, of did you find one already manufactured in that red?
(BTW, how come that master-link isn't painted there too?!...I'm assumin' that IS the master-link there on the bottom right, right?!)

The chain came in red (and several other colours too) but the master link wasn't painted (good eye). I've been meaning to hit that link with some red... probably will around the time the chain's worn out.

Yeah, keeping the whitewall white is a little work, but not that bad. The worse side to clean is the brake side because of all the brake dust that ends up on the tires.
