THEY SOUND SOOOO GOOD.
I'm giggling like a school girl. Granted, a 350lb. hairy school girl with giant man-boobs, but I can't get the grin off my face.
Okay, okay, they're really loud. At least a lot more than I'm used to. Since I bought them used, they might be due for a baffle repacking. But they sound SOOOO good. OMG. Eventually I want to trim off the slashcut, ceramic-coat them black and pick up some billet tips to make some "short canons."
I guess the drilled stockers are going up for sale. My trashed short TORS are going in the ...um, trash.
I'll post about the jetting in the performance forum...

I had the Schwinn Stng Ray with the 5spd stick shift. I really did though and stupid me I gave it to a kid who's family couldn't afford to buy him a bike when I was in my early 20s. Didn't know then it would be worth something now.

Looking forward to whatever jetting you end up with John. I also enjoy posting Dyno figures if you ever give that a go too. Also, whilst I don't know what filters you currently have, Pieman's suggestion to me on the DNA pods as an alternative to K&N's due to my last A/F ratio chart has given me food for thought given the link to Ratnet he also provided. Some of those guys seem to really know their stuff and they back up their results with good research. Glad you love your new SS's too. I loved the cards in the spokes example from our other John, which I expect would seem to say much of what you're experiencing I would have thought, especially if you do the billet tips cos they look great IMHO. staffo

For some real fun, pull the baffles and take them for spin. I still remember the look on my neighbors faces (two actually came out of their houses/garage) and my wife yelled at me. I told them I was just "testing".....
I just wiped my pipes down yesterday and marveled they look as good as the day there were installed (I have just over 30k on mine).

That's the one, yellow with banana seat and those ape hanger looking handle bars. Loved that bike.

I worked for a Schwinn shop in high school. You're talking about the Lemon Peeler. They also had the Orange Crate, can't remember what else. I have 6 or 8 ten-speeds from that era.

Mine had no fenders, the slick rear tire, no springer forks and normal size front tire. It was the Stingray. I think I got it new in about 71 or 72 if I remember right. It looked like this except it had the stick shift like the Apple Crate Al posted.

I love my SS pipes as much as the first day I got them. I still remember the ear-to-ear grin on my face the first time I fired it up in the garage. Went from TOR's to SS long cannons. I also ruined what were probably some valuable baseball cards in my spokes as a kid.

Apologies for this off topic reply but geez that pushy brings back memories. A mate of mine got one for Xmas around 72 so I'll copy it and send a pic to him for old times sakes. Thanks heaps for posting it.
Now the SS pipes, (see, back again). I found them too loud but the mate I was just referring to who I might add has a Heritage Soft Tail, keeps saying to me "your pipes are a bit quiet aren't they ( see signature)? To put it into perspective though, he never seems to ride that far?? ? Lol
What's important here is getting your bike the way you like it, and who cares what others think. They don't ride it. I still would love some billet tips though.

I stopped by my buddy's place down the street and he, his wife and a mutual friend of ours, all Harley riders, thought I was crazy when I said they were loud. My buddy's old Road Glide was pretty quiet, but his (derailed) chopper project was loud as he||. The mutual friend has "shotgun" pipes on his Dyna and I know how loud those are (basically short straight pipes with a paper-thin layer of baffling inside).

I had short TORs since I bought the bike in '02. The first winter I had my bike I eliminated the airbox and started using dual K&Ns (same as the Freak, but not the Freak kit), which woke up the short TORs quite a bit, especially on WOT. A few weeks ago I drilled two baffles out of each of my stock pipes and tried those. I'm keeping the Specialty Spares.

I had the Metallic Blue Sting Ray with the Cheater slick and the small front tire, 5 speed shift on the frame. Had forgotten all about it. Those were cool bikes...

Good to see that you joined the SS club. Would like to see them after you mod them. The new billit tips available look cool as well. Are you going to powder coat the headers as well? Just wondering if it effects the finish if the chrome has turned blue. I need to get off my lazy rear and have my done.
Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

I have an exhaust wrapping kit that I was going to use on my headers, but I'll probably just ceramic-coat the whole shitterie and sell the pipe wrap kit. Only the tips will be polished (probably the drilled style).
Don't hold your breath in anticipation. I'm going to run it as is this year and possibly pull the entire exhaust for mods next Winter/Spring.

I am hoping to order my Long Cannons next week. I want to send off my header pipes to have them ceramic coated to match the new pipes. I am not a mechanic by a long shot. How hard is it to remove the stock pipes and headers? Is this something that a reasonably mechanically inclined person can do themselves or should I have someone do it for me?

If you are reaonably mechanicly inclined it should be a breeze. Pull mufflers, loosen the cross over clamp under the engine, unbolt the clamp on each side just in front of where the headers meet the mufflers, then unbolt the headers from the head. Good idea to do 1 header at a time.

Some people say you can reuse the copper gaskets between the header pipes an the heads. I generally replace them, as recommended by the factory.

C'mon boys. The Schwinn Stingray was to bicycles what Harleys are to guys in a midlife crisis - a stereotype. Real boys who wanted to "go their own way" rode the Raleigh Chopper - kind of a British 'Sir Walter Raleigh' vibe too: And I have Specialty Spares on my bike. I was grinning from ear to ear when I fired them up too. Now, I'm thinking they could stand to be just a little bit louder....

hey, don't diss the chopper, it was the must have bike of the 70's, I had a red one (which was the fastest one to have) and they could pull super wheelies and the 3 gear shifter was superb at crushing your nuts.

Neat, no funny fruit names here - just "chopper". I don't recall seeing any of those in my hood, we could barely afford the expensive (for the time) Schwinn's Sadly, I was in the "not afford" camp. Quote:

I think I found the gaskets on Bikebandit.com but I am not 100% sure. What I found is listed as exhaust pipe sealing ring. It is #9 on the exhaust system schematic. Is this the right part? If not would someone help me figure out what the correct part is?

Ok I was trying to install my long cannons today. The left pipe was a pain in the a%$ to get on it was to tight. The right one went right in without an issue but I can't seem to get it secure. The pipe wants to move around. The bolts on the peg hanger bracket are tight but I can still move the pipe and bracket some. I have a call in to Specialty Spares but with it being a weekend I figure I won't here anything until Monday. Anybody have an idea as to what is wrong and what I can do to fix it?
