Hi guys. I'm going to change my front sprocket and was wondering if there is a SAE socket size that can be used in place of the 38MM?

Can't help you out, but if you're going to convert SAE to metric, might as well have the right size. I believe the socket is 36mm for the front sprocket...

Yup, you are right. 36 mm. I just thought that if an SAE fits (as some sizes do) I could save a buck. Thanks.

36mm is just a hair shy of 1.5 inches.

36mm is precisely 1.417319 inches. 1.5" would be a bit sloppy I'm thinking. That would be about 1 13/31" which is a bit smaller than 1 3/8." Hmmmm is there an SAE that would work?

I have that socket if you want to ride over to Ixonia to change out the spocket.

Sears has them for around $10. Autozone or Pep Boys should also carry that size for a few bucks less. Although in SAE of that size, it wouldn't do any harm at all and fit nicely.

Thanks for the offer but I'll just go buy one. That way I'll have it if I need to change it again. I was a mechanic for many years but wound up off the floor before the big metric push hit. I have a ton of tools but nothing that big in metric. Thanks guys!

Many of the big auto parts chains stock 1/2" drive 36mm sockets intended for servicing car hubs. It's a good tool to have on-hand.

Sloppy, yes but will work in a pinch. After checking some more i found that 1-3/8 is too small, but 1-7/16 will work perfectly.
