A few of us over here in Wales are thinking of going to Sturgis next year, (looks like some fantastic rideout's to be had around there), so was wondering how difficult would it be to hire bikes, and how expensive would it be. anyone from the UK been there and done it?

We got a shindig up here we call the 'Mini-Sturgis.' Its real name is Toad Rock situated amongst some of the best rides anywhere. (The only thing is, you might end up riding with me with British flags on my bike and I know how you feel 'bout that. )

It won't be difficult to hire bikes, but it will be very expensive - and you will have to make your reserations extremely early!! Like all businesses, the hire companies charge what they can get away with, and with lots of people having the same idea, they charge a premium.

One of the bigger hire co's is Eagle Rider. I tried the end July/early Aug for Sturgis location and they couldn't confirm a reservation, even for a 2 day rental. For a 3 day rental in Vegas starting this Sunday, you are looking at $250 for a Sportster & $350 for the bigger bikes. I would think you will have to at least double that for Sturgis during bike week.

That said, I was lucky enough to do Sturgis on a bike in 2003, and it sure is an experience - but the rides do get very crowded for the week and a bit either side.

There is a large HD dealership in Rapid City, SD that I am pretty sure has bikes for rent. It is just off of I-90 in Rapid City. You can probably do a Google search and find it.

I would recommend going to Sturgis 3 to 5 days prior to the start of Bike Week. This way you can ride all over, and checkout all the great sites (and there are too many to name them all) without all the large crowds. You can also checkout Nemo, Deadwood and Sturgis prior to the large crowds, yet see how most of it will be with all the vendors and bars in full swing. Then hangout over the first weekend, and watch the whole area explode. The change in the number of bikes from Friday morning to Saturday morning was amazing.

almost every larger HD dealership rents bikes .Heritages or RKs are around $175 a day or $800 per week,(its 800 quid a week for a rental in Glasgow ,i dont even pay that for my 3 week car rentals back there) .there ballpark figures of course ,well that was the prices when i was in Florida last month.where you fly into is where you should check for Dealers .they usually have all the info on their web sites. the Orlando HD does oneway rentals ,Orlando to several bike rallies ,Sturgis being one of them . Funkletrumpet rented a HD fairly recently in the US ,pm him he'll have loads of info to help you out . let us know how your plans are going ,might have to do Stugis myself next year.bestaluck

Might be a smidgeon cheaper if you rent somewhere like Cheyenne or Billings and ride a few hundred miles to Sturgis. Rapid City is only a half-hour from Sturgis. Not much of a ride. I would guess there is a bit of markup for Harley rentals in Rapid City that week.

I've been going to Sturgis for year's be their this year if god's willing, you will like it. I ride all the diffrent bike I wonder about. I've stayed at Bufflo Chip It's the best know, Glenco is the X rated one. I stay at Dayes Inn Camp grounda not wild or to loud. Only two blocks from McDonles. You can get a nite sleep their except freeway traffic at 2 A.M.(loud pipes). It's not wild as it use to be. If a bar lettes a girl show tittes they could lose their licences. But now at the camp ground's it diffrent. you know about the riding. Just in joy, don't listen to the Sturgis want to go but their wife wont let them go talk. Rent someplace eles and ride their. You will see why we love America.Rudy

thanks for all the reply's, plenty of info to be going on with. the plan is to do a good bit of riding on the way there. I think getting to Sturgis before it starts is also a good idea.

It cost $120.00 for 4 day's camping at dayes In Camp- grounds. With clean privet shows and toilets. A lot of people buy a cheap tent and chair. and just leave them. I will let my friend form Il. tell how much it cost him and how long in advant he makes reservation.Ruy

This last year I camped at the Elkview Campground, which is just off of I-90 about 6 miles east of Sturgis. It was a great campground. Since we got there early we ended up each night in the campground bar around midnight and drank with the owners and their kids, then about 2am I would take a shower, go back and have another beer. They had Hemp Beer on tap, which was very interesting.

The cost at the Elkview Campground was $19.00 plus tax per night. They had two very nice shower houses, with laundry facilities at both. They also served breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were only around for breakfast. Once bike week started they had live music each night.
