High megapixel cameras are for pros with access to high-end printing equipment. The Nikon Coolpix series of cameras take great pics, and 3 megapixel is plenty for catalog prints and way too much for web usage. Most people run about 1024x768 screen resolution, so even a 3 megapixel shot is 4x too big to show on screen and has to be reduced.
Take some of the money you would have put in a camera and invest in a decent tripod, then if you have any left put some into a lighting setup. Product shots are notoriously difficult to light, and digital cameras need a lot of light to really come alive with color and contrast.
