Why didn't anyone tell me this????

I had a small window to ride this afternoon, and instead of warming up the bike for my usual length of time, I put the choke on as usual, then after a bit shut it off, and went on my merry way down the road. It's EFI, so I am thinking warming up is not needed. Shifting into second, the bike whines as it goes into gear, and the engine shuts off. It felt like the rear wheel locked up so I pulled in the clutch and went to the side of the road. Warm up, take two - I let the bike idle and it seems a bit rough initially, but eventually it warms up and I take off again. No problems after that.

So I learned my lesson that even EFI bikes need a proper warm up.

Thanks Z !!!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make this ride.

Give my best to Karen - let her know that I am having some home-cooked filipino food this weekend!

It must have been freezing out. I start my bike, take it easy going out the neighborhood, and it is running great by the time I get to the hwy. My choke/enricher is off by the end of the street. BTW, I love carbs. Once adjusted, they are the greatest.

I have an EFI. I have never used the choke at all. I hit the starter and it fires right up. I do run it while I sort out my jacket and helmet, seems to do the trick.

Doesn't fuel injection eliminate the need for a choke? Sounds kind of odd to me. I'd check with your dealer on this one. None of my friends FI H-D's have any of those type of issues. They just start up and ride, no matter the weather.

Lance,

Don't remember if you posted the year and make of your ride? Is it possible that you have a carbed model?

No choke, its a fast idle as our tractors do not have intelligent efi that compensates for cold engines.

Even the carburetor versions don't have a choke per se. It's an enrichment/fast idle function.

Thanks all for your comments!

I have a 2009 America with EFI. I call it a choke, but as noted it's really a fuel enrichener pull-out thingy.

Although even the manual for my EFI calls it a choke.

Speaking of manual, it says to use the choke/fuel enrichener in the first position when the engine is cold and the outside temp is above 77 degrees and to pull it all the way out when below 77 degrees.

Thanks again for your wisdom on this issue. I always warm the bike up, but this time took a short cut to get on the road and obviously my America was telling me on this occassion, "not quite yet sparky."

They'll have a cold start sensor built in. Triumphs don't, They have a manual pullout thingy, probably on the grounds that if you're intelligent enough to own a Triumph, you're intelligent enough to cope with a manual.

Still sounds like something is amiss. If that's the way the FI bikes run cold, I'll keep my carbs.
Come to think of it, I'll keep my carbs either way!
